We've been hearing for 12 months how nothing will be the same and we're loaded etc.

I've not seen one signing yet that backs up this new found status as one of the big boys.

One thing to remember here is that patience is required. Unless you have a never ending pit of cash the worst thing you can do is blow all the funds immediately.

As an example I think FSG spent a load with them lot as soon as they took over to try and get back to the CL, but they just found out they had been robbed with overpriced crap from Southampton. I don't think they have been willing to spend more than they earn since.

How can you just expect money to fix everything when

1. There are clubs that have richer owners than us (who actually own the club and not just majority shareholder) so they can match if not better us.

2. Some generate 3/4 times the income that we can, so even if we had a massive splurge 2/3 years in a row unless we got CL and won trophies in that time we will quickly fall back when the money runs out.

3. 6 other clubs have a better starting point to be able to build a world class team, this means we might spend loads but only get to where the others are now.

4. If a club has CL or is of a stature of say a utd etc. It's very hard to compete for the very best players that will improve us, there are at least 14 clubs around Europe that are probably more attractive at the moment. We have to get back to a point where people take us seriously again, then you get access to the players who will really kick us on.

5. Even if we had all the funds in the world we are limited by FFP. With our mediocre non TV earnings that is a big problem and why Moshiri is finding new sponsors/looking at a stadium etc.

It is pointless on spending large amounts on the players we can attract now. (Your Troy Deeneys etc.) Ok we may get another Lukaku, a world class player who might not have made it, but likely we will have an array of footballers (most on the bench) that we will have to offload to get to the next stage if we did qualify for CL.

We have money, obviously you could say the Stones deal paid for the Summer window but we've spent 30 odd million this window. Some people may say that's been offset by Cleverley/Niasse but if we are that poor that we need the money to buy, why would we risk it? They both could break a leg tomorrow and be back here.

We have to improve incrementally to get to get where we need to. If we are lucky we may get a season where the top teams are in a mess and we may be in a position to capitalise, but any notion of outspending them is frankly ridiculous.

Great post mate! Really sums it all up.

This summer will be the first very real test of the clubs ambition.

I think that last summer the manager had a squad that he needed to assess and of course it seems that we may have chased unrealistic targets.
The January window was very productive because we were able to sign Lookman and Schneiderlin but generally it is a difficult time to buy players.

The manager has moved on a lot of players he didn't want, he has kept the players he wanted to keep so far and now he faces two challenges . Sorting out the Lukaku and Barkley situations and signing the players he wants to challenge for a CL place next season ... the test will be if the club can match that ambition.

I agree with you in terms of the transfer fees we've paid. That's probably a byproduct of the market now. We haven't gone out and spent 60 million on one player. I think collectively though if you look at Bolasie and Schniderlin for example they are deals that we possibly wouldn't have got over the line previously for a variety of reasons such as wages, profile of the club etc. We wanted Koeman so we got him, that helped us attract Schniderlin. We identified Bolasie and went and spent the cash to go get him. We brought in a highly rated scout and made him our DOF, he identified under valued assets in Gana and hopefully Lookman and advised us to get them. We aren't city, growth needs to be managed and a combination of paying high fees and identifying value in the market will hopefully get us there. Our situation isn't like when Chelsea and City got money. Not only do they probably have more owners cash available to them they got their money at a time when people weren't talking about a top 7. If there are already 6 massive clubs ahead of you at this moment in time then going up against them to compete for players like that CB Koulibaly I think is his name then it takes time to convince them we are serious challengers. You don't just flip a switch and players like Reus, James at Real, Isco start banging at your door to get on board your project

Mosh will provide the funds and do his level best to get players here no doubt. He will still be looking to receive money from sales but not in a tight wad way but in a business manner way. We cannot expect to spend without selling as it just doesn't make sense. I can see us spending about 60m net this summer and strengthen further in January if the rules allow.

I have praised Moshiri this year and think he has so far been a positive element at the club. Having said that however he dropped a bollock not making that statement signing this season. The mentality still hasn't shifted as demonstrated yesterday and he really needs to back the manager this summer.

The only way we are going to shift the mentality of small time out is to gut the side of the likes of Robles, Jagielka, Baines, Kone, Lennon etc. And invest big money on proven winners.

I'm also not a big fan of Lookman or Calvert Lewin playing either right now, both not ready we should have been signing Gabbiadini not spending £11 million on a kid who barely plays.

Same old same old mate.

I've said from day one, watch what this feller actually spends rather than the volume of words he speaks and his spinners speak on his behalf.

He's done nothing here. Any cash laid out has not been toward the squad and he'll get it back in spades when he leaves anyway.

The hero worship of this feller is unreal.
