This commitment in the summer to the squad that we hear from Moshiri: he seems to be making a big deal of the tying down of existing talent to longer deals, so that'll be at the expense of incoming players given we have to keep an eye on FFP and wage limits.

But apart from Barkley and Deulofeu who have contracts that run out in 2018, the rest of the players with a big future (Besic, Lukaku, McCarthy, Stones, Mori) are all tied down to 2019-21 contract range. Lukaku aside, it surely cant be a priority to extend any of those contracts?

We require three top quality players in to progress - four if we lose Stones. A sensible balance has to be struck there.

I think the wages/contracts for the younger players will be counterbalanced by the offloading of a few of the 'seniors', meself.

Perhaps we'll have a bit more in the way of quality over quantity within the squad, but in terms of quantity I'd expect the squad to be 1-2 players lighter next season.

True enough. Hibbert, Gibson, Osman and Pienaar are all going to be punted as it's their final few months contracted to us...Howard and McGeady surely will be gone too...and maybe even Kone.

That leaves us space to operate both policies, I suppose.

When you look at our squad there are opportunities to improve starters or depth in just about every position even assuming we can hold onto what we already have, which is actually the biggest challenge.

If we assume we can keep our stars then I suspect we may add one player at GK, Defence, Central Midfield and Wide/Attack (despite Niasse and Tarashaj) to the senior squad and a couple more quality youngsters.

It is just exciting to believe we are probably in a position to shop higher up the market, though I don't think we will break our transfer record unless Lukaku leaves.

I know sentiment shouldn't get in the way, but I'm wondering the atmosphere generated by the crowd yesterday, which just reinforces that it is a special historic stadium, will make moshiri seriously considering redeveloping goodison as opposed to moving.

IMHO what we need is to move to a better location but build something that apes the best of Goodison. Crowd close to the pitch, steep double decker stands on four sides, crowd right up close to the dug out even. Throw in a few nice touches like the Leitch criss cross, bring back the Littlewoods clocks and a few other retro touches and we are on to a winner. It doesn't have to be souless, just because its new. It's been done over in the States with lots of their ballparks. Camden Yards in Baltimore set the trend. Google it. It's fantastic. There is an old warehouse right next to it which serves as hospitality and admin, too. We can do the same.

Rom's agent must have ended the night with stonking lob-on.

Guaranteed to double his wages his summer, especially if he stays with us

Afternoon Dave. Sun is out, nice weekend and looking forward to the office on Monday.
Now then lets have a chat about something which has gone under the radar but you have picked up on in your post above.
Indeed Moshiri has committed to keep holding of our best players - this is very good news.
How will he go about that I wonder, Agents will present themselves at the end of the season to communicate their clients wishes for there future.
I suspect Money will not be the deciding factor in players staying on but IF Moshiri could keep his best players does he start a new project with a new coach - if that waht it takes? Players values will increase with time eg Rom, Ross, Del, Stones etc but not likewise with the current coach.

Doesn't the FFP only matter if you are playing in Euro though? Otherwise they can't do anything to you for it and City got around it with their generous sponsorships. Or does the spend over the turn over count over a few seasons. If it only matters for next season and we don't make Europe then would it really matter? Buy who we want this year and it won't affect us will it? Or am I massively wrong here mate?

Can we all stop saying how poor kenwright's tenure here has been. Fair enough, it's been atrocious, probably the worst ever ownership we've had, an utter phoney, but let's look to the future and get behind Moshiri in this thread.

There's a Martinez thread to discuss Martinez.

To a certain extent the two subjects will always be intertwined but attempts to move this thread away from it's main topic could be construed as a deliberate attempt to take this thread off-topic, so I would hope @davek will just hit "quote" on your post here and then answer it in one of the Martinez threads after pressing "insert quote".

Thanks for your future co-operation in keeping this thread on-topic. Without your help, moderating this place would be much harder.
