This commitment in the summer to the squad that we hear from Moshiri: he seems to be making a big deal of the tying down of existing talent to longer deals, so that'll be at the expense of incoming players given we have to keep an eye on FFP and wage limits.

But apart from Barkley and Deulofeu who have contracts that run out in 2018, the rest of the players with a big future (Besic, Lukaku, McCarthy, Stones, Mori) are all tied down to 2019-21 contract range. Lukaku aside, it surely cant be a priority to extend any of those contracts?

We require three top quality players in to progress - four if we lose Stones. A sensible balance has to be struck there.

I remember listening to Roy Evans on talksport a while back, and he said that when he was in charge they would look to renew contracts every year of the young players, which continued into the Houllier era. Even if they had 4 years left, you give them another, so long as they have shown they are developing. He contrasted this approach with the current approach of FSG who let Sterling's contract run down and left themselves in difficulty, as he wanted a wage hike that was unrealistic and was frustrated that hadn't kept him "on side" with regular improvements.

I see a lot of similarities with what we do. Make no bones about it, if a player pushes enough he will be out irrespective of the length of contract. The key is to keep some level of meritocracy and keep renewing contracts. When I heard that it was music to my ears really.

I think it firstly shows there have been some positive discussions with Martinez. He would have stressed the importance of keeping young players in his discussions. Secondly we have a good basis of a squad going forward. The "fab 4" alongside Besic and McCarthy (with possibly Robles) gives us a really good base to build from. What we shouldn't be doing is ripping up the rule book. Steady growth is the Everton way and the best way for me.

Keep those players, learn to defend a bit better, show more game knowledge and add 1 or 2 experienced players and we are really not a long way off a title challenge. Imagine if Stones had shown last seasons form? Basic gets a proper run. Barkley/Lukaku keep developing. Robles continues his improvement and had played most of this season. Scary stuff!

I agree. We need to avoid overcomplicating matters. Avoid bringing in too many, which can destabilise a squad through corp spirit going out the window and confusion over best starting line ups - we have just about enough competition for places at the moment apart from GK, and RB (and I'd say an out and out attacker to step in for Lukaku). The three we bring in need to be real quality.

He never ruled it out in his piece in the program...

Doesn't seem out of place...onwards, we go.
I know he never ruled it out. I'm just wondering experiencing an atmosphere at goodison for the first time like last night, if it has swayed his opinion to wanting to stay. Let's hope it has. There is something so special about our heritage. Football focus summed it up yesterday. Doing it live from St. Luke's church you can see the immediate connection with the club and its community. The programme spoke fondly about our links to the community, would this be lost if we moved to a new stadium? Sometimes you just can't put a price on the links with the club and its community.

Kinell, I was after a waterfront job before you wrote that, and now I want to stay.

Sake.
