This commitment in the summer to the squad that we hear from Moshiri: he seems to be making a big deal of the tying down of existing talent to longer deals, so that'll be at the expense of incoming players given we have to keep an eye on FFP and wage limits.
But apart from Barkley and Deulofeu who have contracts that run out in 2018, the rest of the players with a big future (Besic, Lukaku, McCarthy, Stones, Mori) are all tied down to 2019-21 contract range. Lukaku aside, it surely cant be a priority to extend any of those contracts?
We require three top quality players in to progress - four if we lose Stones. A sensible balance has to be struck there.
We can't afford any more than currently. People are getting a bit carried away. We need to increase turnover substantially and not rely on the TV money. Moshiri didn't get rich by throwing money away. He certainly won't spend 10 million a year on one players wages..
Both their faces in that interview, buzzing after that game.
You could not have asked for a better first game for Moshiri to watch, that's just added a few more mill to the transfer budget in the summer.
You also have to factor in the Euro2016 tournament: price inflation can really test a clubs hand on a star player.
At this point I personally think there's more chance of Ethiopia landing a man on the moon this summer than us selling Lukaku, but we'll see.
I agree. We need to avoid overcomplicating matters. Avoid bringing in too many, which can destabilise a squad through corp spirit going out the window and confusion over best starting line ups - we have just about enough competition for places at the moment apart from GK, and RB (and I'd say an out and out attacker to step in for Lukaku). The three we bring in need to be real quality.
Cleverley is a stop gap at most for left wing for me.It's funny really everyone agrees we don't need a lot, but we all have slightly different ideas what we need. We do need a goalkeeper, but what type of keeper we need depends on the improvements of Joel between now and the summer. If we'd have been in goal all season and not the clown I'm pretty sure we'd be in the top 6.
I think the question of the attacker will boil down too where he sees Niasse's future. I think if he sees him as a striker we are ok, with Kone as a third choice. If Kone is moved on I can see a loan move for a forward.
Likewise the future position of Cleverley is important. If he sees him as more of a wide attacking midfielder, I think we are ok in that position but probably a little short in central midfield. If he wants to move Cleverley back maybe a left footed player. My preference would be keeping Cleverley where he is and adding another central midfield player who is a bit more creative. Someone like Cabaye would be fantastic.
He's just a spiv FFS. Get off your knees.
