In fact, now I have written that, also midfield positions being described as numbers, not sure why but this irritates me.

Definitely this. The game has evolved so much since the days that wearing a number actually indicated your role, that it is completely meaningless to describe someone as a 6 or an 8 nowadays, but hey ho - hipsters gonna hip
