Forgiving players....

It's more about respect. If a player, say Fellaini, came out tomorrow and said "I believe I'm good enough to play for Madrid and win a ton of ****, therefore although I love Everton and the fans I'd like to move". I think a lot of people would be more ok with it rather than handing in a transfer request without public comment and either refusing to play or playing turd.

Yeah true, perhaps I'm falling out of love with the game, and look at it as a business rather than a sport these days. Sad really.

That was what Rooney did to me in '04 mate.

Thats when the Football died.

I think when I forgave him is when it hit home for me. I'm around the same age as him, I couldn't dream of doing what he did being in the same situation, leaving your boyhood team so early, I was a wreck and very angry at him.

When I forgave him, part of that was "it's a job, you'd do the same in your job". I think that sucked just as much.

He did the right thing at the end of the day too. If we didn't sell him, we'd have gone under.

Not even arsed about Pienaar. He's nothing special anyway. Take Baines out of the equation and he's a very limited player, who would hardly be walking into most of the 1st teams in the top 8.

I wouldnt have a problem with anyone coming back, they got offered better deals and went. I suspect most would do the same, footballers or not.
Rooney will never come back, he is maturing now and living up to his potential, can see him at UTD for ever.

Nah I don't get this "I won't forgive him thing" I really don't. It's there career's and they want to win things and earn shed loads of money. Rooney and lescott made the right career choices and while they don't play for us I'll gladly give them grief and hate on them when they play against us but if they come back I'll happily support them to there best to make us better.

I want to see my club win things in an era when it's very hard to do so. If that is helped by players coming back that made a decision to once move on so be it.

The badge kissing by Rooney was a low blow but so was some of the stuff coming from the stands aimed at him.

They're footballers, what's all this forgiveness lark? I know we all like the team and that, but a bit of detachment is good for the soul, especially following Everton. Players will come, players will go, only the club will remain.

Rooney's the one I'll never forgive. Supposed to understand what playing for Everton was supposed to mean re: T-shirt antics. Then comes back to Goodison and frequently gives us ****e and tries to wind us up. Talk about pissing on your own. The age doesn't really matter to me. In fact it strengthens the argument that he could have given us at least another year. At that age I would never have done what he did. Other players have treated the club badly, but he targeted the fans. For that he can **** off.

Did we cheer him when he came back? Not sure we did, so what exactly do you expect someones reaction to be when they're bombarded with stick from the terraces? How dare he give as good as he gets. It's this attitude that says fans can shout whatever they like at players but if a player gives any back they recoil in horror at the sheer affront of it all. Some folks need to get a grip. You're a grown man ffs.

Spot on, the abuse he was thrown when he came back, as a teenager no less, what would you expect an uneducated (and he is) teenager to do in retaliation? Both parties were wrong, but I don't see anyone getting on the back of our fans.

Having witnessed two members of my family die in the last year and seen my brother fighting for his life (still going on) I think forgiving a footballer for moving to another club comes quite easily to me as there are far more important things in life to worry about. If Lescott returned i'd be made up. If Rooney came back i'd **** myself i'd be so amazed.

I agree with not wanting Rooney back, what he did when he kissed the badge was tantamount to murder. I mean so what if he was an 18 year old lad and was getting vile abuse from thousands of fans of the club he'd supported since he was a boy, he should have known better, after all he was 18 at which age most lads are completely grown up. It's a joke really, he should be sent down for life. He kissed United's badge, it probably just pips Mugabe's actions in Zimbabwe in terms of disgrace.

It's ok Brennan - I get it. ;)

Beautiful RAWK pastiche old chap. :)

Fantastic post that puts everything in perspective.

The same people who have a go at Lescott for leaving will then want to get rid of Heitinga a player who wants to stay and was our best player last season. Its incredible double standards but thats football.

Rooney is different, he is an Evertonian, him leaving when he did was horrible. Never scored in a derby, never captained his boyhood club etc. He could have stayed a few years and still lived his dream of trophies and all that. I think he is worse.

Players owe us nothing, I reckon fans of the club do though.

Also, shoe on the other foot, I bet a lot of us would tell Galaxy fans to "get over it" and "he's furthering himself" if Donovan joined us. No double standards there.
