Former Everton Centre Forward Duncan Ferguson steps into management.....

BT SPORT DISCUSS EVERTON MANAGERIAL VACANCY

Questions were asked to Martin Keown and Rio Ferdinand by Gary Lineker in regards to the Marco Silva sacking and the potential successor to the post.

MK: Silva needed more time in my opinion, he got Everton back into Europe last season and had qualified for the knockout stage. It's what Everton fans what; a trophy.

RF: He was sleepwalking into a relegation battle, 5 points adrift of the bottom three and a win was looking more and more unlikely. He had no Plan B and the football wasn't working. I saw the West Ham game recently and the players looked completely lost out there.

GL: To me it looked like it went the same way it did with Roberto Martinez, a good solid first season but followed by a poor one. Everton, with the players they have shouldn't be 15th in the table!?

RF: He had no back up plan, the defence became a shambles. He missed an opportunity to sign a goalscorer in the summer and resorted to playing Sandro. It says it all.

GL: Who will go there? Are we looking at another rescue job for someone until the end of the season?

MK: I think David Unsworth is capable of steadying the ship. He didn't do too badly last time. I think the last thing the Evertonians want is Sam Allardyce or an equivalent.

RF: Well, one name I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned is Duncan Ferguson's. He knows the club like the back of his hand, been there as a coach for many years and he's doing a great job in the conference with Fylde. He's got them fighting for promotion and had a good steady season there last year. The fans at Everton love him, they will want him to do well. I don't see why not? He plays stylish football and is defensively sound. Give him a contract until the end of the season.

MK: He's unproven Rio, yes he's doing a good job with Fylde but the Premier League is a different level. He went to Fylde to make a name for himself. He has a chance of getting them promoted to the football league, why on earth would he back away from that now? I say let him learn his trade under the radar and build from the ground up.

RF: You've got to remember, he loves Everton. He will want this chance more than anything.

Tell Fylde to swivel and take the Everton job Dunc.

You know it makes sense

We know it makes sense

Sense knows it makes sense

FYLDE CLIMB BACK TO THE TOP

december results and fixtures.webp

It was a poor result away to Boreham Wood and a poor performance to match as Fylde came away without any points but it was a contrasting performance four days later when Leyton Orient travelled to Mill Farm. Fylde found themselves 1-0 down in the 56th minute after playing good direct football in the first half and it looked like it could have been one of those days for Fylde but their fortunes changed when Ferguson went with two up top in McFarlane and Rowe when Rowe earned a penalty after being fouled in the 79th minute. With Rowe stepping up, there was no mistake as it was blasted into the bottom corner. Substitute Kyle McFarlane scored the winner in the 85th minute ensuring all three points were in the bag.

On loan winger Stephen Dooley was the name of everyone's lipps after two goals from the left wing in the 3-1 victory over Harrogate but later went off injured in the 68th minute. It was confirmed he could be ruled out for two months.

Struggling Eastleigh were up against a side in good form and it was two second half goals with a spectacular header from Centre back Tom Brewitt.

We are just over the halfway mark in the campaign and it is Fylde who sit at the top going into the christmas period. A tough game against Salford City on boxing day awaits The Coasters.

Fylde continued their remarkable form in the Vanarama National League with the only points dropped were against Hartlepool United. Fylde trailed the game 1-0 and it looked like a certain defeat until striker Kyle McFarlane equalised in the 85th minute and grabbed a point for The Coasters. A big win came thre days later away to Billericay. Danny Rowe was back to his usual devasting poacher-like form grabbing two goals and in-form winger James Hardy with the other with one goal coming from an own goal.

Left winger Joe Cardle scored an excellent left footed volley against Halifax scoring the only goal in a game were Fylde could have had more.

With a recent run of results under their belt, it looked like everything had started to click into place with a very impressive performance against Salford City. Fylde played a very direct passing game and Joe Cardle stood out as the games best performer scoring two clinical goals in a performance that can only be described as beautiful. The Fylde faithful took to twitter after the match with superlatives for sought after Joe Cardle hoping their wizard will sign his contract extension with his deal up in the summer. It is rumoured Cardle is hoping for a big money move into the football league as a number of Fylde players are also targets for the so-called bigger clubs in England. Centre-back Nathanael Ogbeta was the subject of a bid from Scottish club Hibernian but Ferguson refuses to lose one of his key players with such an important phase of the season coming up.

The non-league football paper caught up with Duncan Ferguson:

DF: What we saw out there against Salford was the blueprint for what we set out to do 18 months ago. Everything came together and we have a fantastic first team squad capable of so much more than the National League. It is our aim to keep these lads together and progress into the football league. There is a bit of speculation surrounding our players but that's only because of how well they are doing. I ask them to be patient because if they continue to play this way there's no reason we can't be involved in promotion or play-offs this season.

OGBETA SEALS HEARTS MOVE

Duncan Ferguson stated in his Torquay pre-match press conference that it was a deal that Fylde could not refuse for both the club and the player. He insisted the player wanted to leave to further his career but Ferguson wanted to keep Ogbeta until the end of the season to help with the push for promotion. Ferguson also claimed it is not good for squad morale to keep a player who is unhappy and could unsettle the squad during an important phase for the club. Ogbeta was only at Fylde for 6 months before sealing his move to Hearts. It is now an opportunity for Niall Canavan to prove himself for a start at Centre back after finding himself out of favour as of late.

AS WE APPROACH THE BUSINESS END OF THE SEASON....

Dag and Red score.webp

It was a point apiece in the game against Dagenham and Redbridge where either side were unable to take control of the game. Dagenham put in a very good display against the league leaders and in the end a draw was a fair result.

Hereford dominated away at Mill Farm in a game Duncan Ferguson made numerous changes. It was an opportunity for fringe players to prove what they could do but it was apparent Ferguson has other priorities this season and made the changes accordingly. It was a poor showing from Fylde and to make matters worse, goalkeeper put the ball into his own net in the 95th minute.

torquay score.webp

It was back to league action against struggling side Torquay United. Winger Joe Cardle scored two absolute beauties with his devastating left foot with assists coming from right winger James Hardy. Joe Cardle, who has attracted a lot of interest from League One clubs, has been labelled the 'non-league Gareth Bale'.

tranmere score.webp

One of the games of the season between the leagues big boys. James Hardy put the coasters 1-0 up early on in the game but Tranmere pushed and pushed and eventually got the equaliser towards the end of the second half going in at 1-1. Danny Rowe his his free kick agains the wall in the 50th minute but the rebound fell kindly and was able to twist and turn into a shooting position and make the scoreline 2-1. It was not over yet as Tranmere put Fylde under second half pressure and scored from a corner kick making it seem like the game was destined for a draw bur Fylde did not give up and this is why they are top of the league. In form striker Danny Rowe this time, got his free kick up and over the wall with it nestling into the top corner! 3-2! The final whistle blew and there was scenes of delight from the bench as Duncan Ferguson fist bumped the air with elation before making his way over to the travelling coasters.

Deservedly so, winger Joe Cardle picked up the player of the month award with some exquisite displays. Joe proved his worth by getting himself forward and into goalscoring positions. He has been one of Fylde's outstanding performers this season.

Upon picking up his second manager of the month award, Duncan Ferguson had this to say. "It's a great achievement but it is an award that does concern me. They say whoever wins these things is cursed from then on! It's not just me, it's the lads out there week in, week out who are digging in hard and getting us the results."

(Ferguson on promotion)
"We are taking it one game at a time and if we are up there at end of the seaon then fantastic but it's not something that we discuss in the dressing room or on the training ground. We are focused on each game as it comes and are ensuring we are all in the best possible condition."
