Former Everton Centre Forward Duncan Ferguson steps into management.....

THE TITLE RACE HEATS UP

march results.webp

With no wins in their last five, Fylde look lacklustre and frustrated as they have only managed to collect 3 points from their last 5 games. For a team that was on the verge of the title, the race has now been carved open with Bury and Ebbsfleet picking up results to close the gap.

Fylde went to Haig Avenue expected a win against bottom of the table Southport but the home side put up an excellent fight and restricted Fylde to only a point. It was another tough game against Solihull Moors and a frustrating moment cost Fylde all three points as Solihull grabbed the equaliser in the 91st minute against a napping back line.

The away trip down south to Dover didn't see a revival as Fylde were comfortably beaten 2-0 and had no answer to even get a goal against the mid-table side. Duncan Ferguson demanded a reaction as a must-win fixture against Chesterfield was next on the fixture list. The first half was evenly matched as both sides went in at 0-0 but a free kick scored by Charlie Wakefield put Chesterfield in the lead. Fylde reacted quickly and a minute later Denver Hume crossed in from the left and poacher Danny Rowe grabbed his 21st goal of the season with a powerful header back across the face of the goal nestling into the bottom corner. The game ended 1-1 and Fylde need to find that devastating form that has seen them dominate the National League this season. It will be heartbreaking for The Coasters to lose this now after sitting top of the league for almost the whole season.

It is now a three horse race and Bury have a game in hand due to their involvement in the FA Trophy.

FYLDE ARE FALLING APART

Sutton United were the better side on the day as Duncan Ferguson opted to play with three central midfielders as opposed to Danny Philliskirk in the no. 10 role. Sam Evans came in for his first start of the season due to Paul Paton suffering an injury. Cardle, Rowe and Hardy still led the team forward but could not create anything. It was another poor showing and these recent results have come at the wrong time.

Same old story as Fylde failed to create any worthwhile chances. Powell was sent off for Maidstone in the 74th minute and was an opportunity for Fylde to take advantage and play a more attacking style but Maidstone held their nerve and came away with a deserved point.

Next up for Fylde is fellow promotion chasers Bury. Everyone associated with the club realises the importance of this fixture and there is a lot of hype surrounding it around the coast. A must-win for either side in this epic race for the title.

Fylde are doing a Liverpool here. How's that lead slipped so much?

We were poor against Dover and Sutton. We have struggled to create any real chances and it was frustrating not being able to score against ten men Maidstone.

To be leading like we have all season and to start losing it when we are so close is extremely frustrating. On a positive note, we started the season with play-offs as the aim so we have secured that. There was no emphasis on the club to win the league but having been the leaders, it soon became apparent that is what we must now aim to achieve. It's just such a shame to see what has happened recently. Still, we have made progress from last season and are getting to where we want to be.

Ebbsfleet managed to pick up all three points whilst Fylde and Bury both claimed a point apiece. Danny Rowe gave the home side the lead in the first half after a grat through ball from left back Denver Hume found him through on goal. The lead last for just over 30 minutes when Bury's Soule picked up the ball outside his own area after breaking down an attacking move from Fylde and he just ran with it without any opposition challenge and buried the ball hard and low into the back of the net. Both sides appeared cautious throughout the rest of the game but on the whole it was a much sturdier performance from Fylde and they showed a glimpse of their old self, they defended well and created chances at the other end, probably a draw will be a fair result but maybe Fylde could have took a gamble and utillised their famous direct approach.

DF: I'm pleased with how we defended, it was a strong defensive performance against a tough side. I'm gutted to see how the table looks now, however we still have games to turn this around.

"Duncan, what has happened lately? You are winless in eight games!"

"We've done everything right. The training has still been intense, the players here are happy and they want to succeed. It all comes down to what happens after I send them out on to the pitch. This is a tough league and sides will fight you tooth and nail here. A couple of injuries and suspensions as of late but that's no excuse. We've got three games lef to play and a big effort is required."

"You signed your new contract, are you pleased to be given an extension?"

"They must like what I'm doing! I'm happy at Fylde, it's a great club and I have a good relationship with the chairman as well as the players. We have to progress to the next step in this clubs career, we are not a far cry from the football league."

Bury have a game in hand over Ebbsfleet and Fylde and have a chance to go two points clear at the top. Fylde must win all remaining games and hope the other teams drop points.

Fylde may have blown their chances of automatic promotion after failing to beat Boreham Wood on home turf. Smith gave the visitors the lead from a free-kick which Russel Griffiths got a hand to but the pwer of the shot took it past him. Fylde had the better of possession and it eventually paid off when midfielder Paul Paton, who has jusgt returned from injury played a ball out wide to Joe Cardle and a low cross found the foot of Danny Rowe who poked it home. Ryan Croasdale was sent off for a second yellow card and Fylde couldn't grab a winner in the last twenty minutes. The Fylde fans asked questions of manager Duncan Ferguson as he headed for the tunnel but Ferguson just kept his head down. It appears they are disappointed at the lack of fight shown over recent games and Ferguson has failed to give them an explanation.

Fylde must hope for Bury and Ebbsfleet both to slip up whilst winning their remaining games. It seems a lot to ask for at this stage of the season.

Well, not quite, here is what is happening.

I've started a new football manager 2019 save and I've taken Duncan Ferguson from the coaching staff of Everton and started his new managerial career. Duncan has left Everton with immediate effect and is on the search for his first job in football.

View attachment 50884I'm hoping to one day get him into the Everton job but first he needs to find a club to manage.......He is starting off unemployed and will apply for job vacancies he feels suited for and ready to start his manageral career.
Let us hope you fail in the longer term
