Norwich had to put a good run together if they were to stay in the play-off places. Ferguson kept the same team that comfortably despatched Bolton Wanderers a few days earlier. Colm Goode worked under Ferguson at Fylde and after 9 minutes was through on goal putting Portsmouth 1-0 up at Fratton Park. Jamieson threw the ball back into play in the Portsmouth half, Hallett took it forward and his cross was cleared away, Mgaga picked it up and took a brief look around before having a shot which went in off the underside of the bar, 1-1! A beautiful strike! Richardson took the ball down the right on 41 minutes, he was too quick and played in a great ball to the feet of Johnston who shrugged off his marker and launched it into the top right corner from close range, 2-1! Portsmouth were putting Norwich under the cosh and Paul McCluskey slid in late on Barthram and received a straight red card for a cynical foul. Norwich down to ten men. Portsmouth changed their approach and went with an additional striker up front. A minute into the second half and Kouadio took the corner for Portsmouth and found Cartwright at the front post who nodded past Batth to make it 2-2. Jon Foster replaced Joshua Hallett to support the midfield. Foster made an instant contribution when he crossed from the left and found Richardson at the far post lurking to tap in to make it 3-2! Portsmouth had a corner with 13 minutes to go, Cartwright with a dangerous ball in and Goode headed towards goal, Mgaga was there to clear off the line, Batth was beaten. Norwich got up the pitch quick, trying to hit Portsmouth on the counter, Richardson got it on the right and drilled a low ball into the box which almost deflected off a Portsmouth player and in. Robbie Greaves came on for Angel Gomes with 10 minutes to go. Ferguson instructed his team to defend. Kendall pumped the free-kick into the box on 85 minute and Greaves was pulled down by Cole Palmer, the referee awarded Norwich the spot kick and a chance to put this game to bed. Robbie Greaves fancied it and he delivered placing it into the bottom left corner! 4-2! Robbie Greaves took the ball from Kendall's pass and cut inside a minute later, his shot just drifting wide. Greaves played in Johnston on 89 minutes and the keeper done well to push his shot wide. It's a great win for Norwich as they maintain their position in the table.

DF: To go down to ten men and to lose our lead like that was disappointing but a few tweaks saw us get back on top. We've took another 3 points on the road and scored a few more goals, the team are playing well and are starting to play with confidence.

=Aston villa result.webp

It was a big game for The Canaries against 5th place Aston Villa who were two points ahead of Norwich going into this game broadcast live on Sky TV. Ole Gunnar Solksjaer was new at Aston Villa and a promotion for his team could see him redeem his managerial credibility again. Ferguson made a few changes with Sam Wilkins and Robbie Greaves playing down the left, Ed Bircham replacing Joel Latibeaudiere and Garry Hill replacing Matt Kendall. Hallett took the corner on 9 minutes and Greaves tried the glancing header at the front post but it was easy for the keeper. Jamieson took the throw deep in the Aston Villa half, Hill knocked it back to Jamieson, he crossed in and Buckingham cleared the ball, Richardson headed the ball back into the box and Morrisey headed but only as far as Richardson who controlled it on the chest and volleyed into the gaping net left by the keeper who rushed of his line! 1-0 to the visitors! Villa pumped the ball into the box on 42 minutes, Jamieson headed but it fell to Cooper, he tried a shot and Batth saved, Cooper slid in to knock the loose ball over the line and equalise just before half-time. The second half served up little action and the match ended 1-1. A win for Millwall over the weekend could see them overtake Norwich in 6th place.

Matt Kendall and Joel Latibeaudiere were back in the starting line-up and it seemed nothing but a win would be good enough against third place Stoke City. The first half was frustrating and Norwich struggled to create many chances to trouble Stoke. Norwich lost possession on the edge of the Stoke box and Ward managed to find Ryan Richards who knocked it past King and was through on goal, he ran forward at pace and slotted past Batth to give Stoke the lead on 48 minutes. Ferguson made changes with Bytheway replacing Richardson and Greaves replacing Johnston. Mgaga took the throw on 72 minutes, he found Gomes who tried the cross, the ball ran free to Matt Kendall who dashed into space and unleashed a great right footed shot which beat the keeper to level! The match went into stoppage time, Bytheway played it to Cottrell who ran forward and got it wide to Mgaga on the left, he crossed but the ball went over the line and out for a goal kick. The match ended a draw and it's not the free flowing football the Norwich fans were expecting under Ferguson but he is still getting good results.

A big game at Carrow Road with Leeds United the visitors. Leeds had missed out on a return to the Premier League over the last three seasons and sat just four points off play-offs. Norwich were in contention and it was a surprising formation change as Ferguson went 4-4-2 with Johnston and Greaves playing together up front. Three minutes in and the crowd were silenced when Kingsley Godwin rifled in a shot from 20 yards which curled into the bottom left to give Leeds an early lead. Norwich got forward down the right and Jamieson took the ball in plenty of space, he sent a floating cross into the box and Johnston won the header but was inches wide. Richardson ran forward and played a good ball into the box for Johnston and he struck the post, just not going right for Norwich so far. Norwich broke forward again, Gomes down the left played it forward to Johnston, Greaves was in space in the box and he crossed in, Greaves won the header and he hit the post. Two minutes before half-time and Jamieson crossed low into the box, Johnston left it and it went into the bottom corner! The referee states the goal is to be disallowed! He is saying Jamieson committed a foul before crossing the ball, thje Norwich players are furious with the referee. The atmosphere turned ugly at Carrow Road. The half-time whistle blew to a chorus of boos. Ferguson went on to the pitch to confront referee Darren England and he waved the manager away. Ferguson was livid as he walked back down the tunnel. Gomes wins the ball and rund forward on 46 minutes, he has Greaves in support and he plays him in, Greaves went for the bottom corner but the keeper pushes it out, he should have went across him. Foster won the ball back on 73 minutes, the crowd were really behind this team who were putting in a great display, he played it to Kendall and Kendall played a long ball for Matt Johnston to chase down, he got there and blasted with his left foot to make it 1-1! The stadium erupted! Johnston timed his run to perfection! 74 minutes and Mgaga took the ball down well and played it forward to Gomes, he played it to Hallett and he knocked it on once more to Richardson, Richardson had a shot and the keeper saved, it ran free to Johnston who knocked it in to make it 2-1! The roof came off at Carrow Road! Every second felt like a minute and Kendall missed the tackle on Godwin, he got it forward to James Jackson and he slotted past Batth. 2-2. Brilliant game at Carrow Road and Brownhill played in James Jackson on 89 minutes who was beyond the defence and he beat Batth to make it 3-2, Leeds have only gone and nicked it! Kendall got it wide to Brown on 92 minutes, he crossed into the box, Hallett knocked it down for Kendall and his shot was pushed wide. Eddie King took the corner, it floated in the air and Latibeaudiere rose to win the header, it looper over the keeper and looked to be going wide but it snuck into the bottom corner and it was 3-3! What an incredible second half at Carrow Road! It's all over and what a finish to this epic encounter! Norwich will feel like it's two points dropped but done well to snatch a late goal.

DF: That game had everything, we were the better team and the direct football was incredible at times. Going with two up front worked for us today and allowed Johnston to get more into the match. We got done a couple of times down the middle and the direct ball forward also worked in their favour. We stay in contention for play-offs, I'm pleased but wanted to win desperately.

Norwich City vs Preston North End

Captain Joel Latibeaudiere suffered an injury in training so Ed Bircham partnered Eddie King in defence. Ferguson opted for the 4-4-2 formation once again against a high-flying Preston side. Jamieson played the ball down the right for Richardson who turned and ran forward into space, he passed inside to Greaves who lobbed the ball into the box and Johnston took it down and finished it on his left foot to make it 1-0 after 8 minutes! Richardson picked up the ball on the right and came forward, he knocked the ball into the path of Garry Hill but he was hacked down by Scott Sanders who had already been booked, he received his second yellow card and was sent off. Richard Batth pulled off some great saves to keep the scoreline at 2-0. With 5 minutes to go Naylor was allowed to get his cross in and Bright Boateng beat Mgaga in the air and his header hit the top corner to pull a late goal back for ten men Preston. Mgaga took the throw and Ian Brown done well to win the corner on 87 minutes. Eddie King played the corner to the edge of the box, Garry Hill lined up the shot but the keeper done well to get across and push it wide. Preston pushed hard for a late equaliser but good organisation from Norwich saw them get the win but Millwall's 5-0 win over Barnsley pushes them out of the play-off places.

DF: Even when they went down to ten men they made it difficult for us, they're having a great season and no doubt will be fighting for promotion at the end of the season. We just need to keep our heads and keep getting results, it's tight at this end of the table and we need to stay competitive.

There is an air of shock around the city of Norwich this evening as Duncan Ferguson has lost his job as manager. In his post-match press conference, Ferguson was asked his thoughts about Everton parting company with Gudelj and Ferguson's response let everyone know his affiliation and love for the club is still strong. Ferguson also exclaimed how it would be his dream to one day manage Everton and the Norwich board did not take too kindly to his comments. It may seem they have reacted to this news and perhaps could have been dealt with better. This dismissal also places Norwich's promotion chances in doubt as Ferguson was on a very good run.
