Former Everton Centre Forward Duncan Ferguson steps into management.....

FERGUSON SET FOR A RETURN TO ENGLAND?

The rumour mill was churning away today as talk of Duncan Ferguson making a return to England. It wasn't all going wrong for him in Spain with Zaragoza in with a chance of the play-offs but there is talk he could replace Phillip Cocu at Leicester City. Leicester are on the verge of relegation after 22 years of top flight football and one league title in 2016.

After suffering a 2-1 defeat against Newcastle and only five games to go, The Foxes are going to be battling to the end of the season and Cocu is likely to get the chop any day now. Ferguson would relish the chance to manage in the Premier League but has always stated he only wants to do it with Everton.

Real Zaragoza vs Eibar
30th March 2036

=Eibar result.png

It was approaching the business end of the season and it was still all to play for. Eibar were aiming to return to the top flight instantly whilst Zaragoza were clinging on for a play-off spot. Eugenio Alvarez partnered Juan in the middle and Ioseba Flano played behind Zubillaga with Richard Donkor on international duty with Ghana. 20 minutes into the match and it was all too easy for Eibar as Oses crossed into the box for Bakero and he headed comfortably under no pressure to make it 1-0. Another chance for Eibar came two minutes later, the header won by Martorell was too easy and Martinez was easily beaten. Ioseba Flano limped off just before half-time with a hamstring injury and Xavier Alvarado was brought on. A minute into the second half Alonso took the ball down from Perez's clearance, Eibar were outnumbered, Zubillaga received the pass on the left and played it back across the box for Alvarado to strike into the bottom corner! A lifeline for Zaragoza! Zaragoza were pinning Eibar back and were on top in the second half, Cobos got it forward to Zubillaga, he passed the ball into the box for Alvarado and he shot against the post, the ball rebounded into the keeper and over the line to make it 2-2! Zaragoza pulled the game back! Eibar could not deal with Zaragoza in the second half, Manzella won the ball back on the edge of the Eibar area and passed to Alonso, he crossed to the far post and Cobos headed into the net to make it 3-2! What a comeback, straight out of the Duncan Ferguson scrapbook! With 6 minutes to go Galneres hit a hopeful shot from 30 yards and it hit the post beating Martinez and going over the line to level the score! Six minutes of stoppage time was added, Martinez sent the ball upfield and Alvarado used his pace to beat the defender to get to the ball first, he crossed into the box but it deflected behind for a corner. Zubillaga won the header from the goal kick and played in Abadias down the left, his cross was blocked and that signalled the last action of this epic encounter. Zaragoza were the better team in the second half and will be disappointed to have not taken the three points.

DF: It was some second half! First half performance was unacceptable but we turned it around in the second and we should have hung on for the win. Robert Cobos and Ioseba Flano are going to be out for about four weeks with injuries sustained in the match.

Oviedo vs Real Zaragoza
6th April 2036

=Oviedo result.png

Eugenio Alvarez got a start in the centre with Carlos Romero still out injured. Zubillaga and Alvarado started up front. It reamined to be seen if the recent rift between Alvarado and Ferguson had been resolved or whether Ferguson was hoping to play it down. There was no talk in the build-up to the game and Alvarado hadn't spoken out since. Eugenio Alvarez played the ball to Juan and he took a long range shot which swerved through the defence and past the keeper on 55 seconds! What a great start for Zaragoza! Oviedo hit back on 27 minutes when Caron sent the ball forward from the left back position and Dragone peeled away from Javi and lobbed the ball over Martinez to equalise. The second half was frustrasting for Zaragoza so Ferguson made changes brining on Donkor for Alvarado and Galindo replaced Manzella. With a few minutes left to play Francisco Gomez cut a nice ball inside the box for Chus Abadias and he smashed it as hard as he could into the roof of the net through the gaping hands of the goalkeeper! Surely that's the winner? Zaragoza made it through the five minutes of stoppage time to record a good away win keeping them in the play-off places six points clear of Lugo.

Leganes vs Real Zaragoza
13th April 2036

=Leganes result.png

League leaders Leganes took on Real Zaragoza at Butarque and it marked the return to midfield for Carlos Romero. Richard Alonso missed the match through injury but Francesc Alonso came in for only his second league start of the season. Leganes got off to a flying start and were in the faces of the Zaragoza players, the ball down the right from Gold found Simon in the box and he flicked it on for Antonio to turn home on the half volley. Gold played the free-kick into the box and aimed for the far post, Hector Ormad cleared away but only as far as Ramon, he took the shot but it deflected, Martinez had already committed himself and Antonio rolled the ball into an empty goalmouth. Ridiculous defending from Zaragoza. It was head in hands for Ferguson as he watched his team crumble yet again. Fernandez curled the ball round Martinez and into the net on 42 minutes to make it 3-0 and put Leganes light years ahead. Olly Gold ran the show and gave Zaragoza players nightmares, even on 90 minutes he was still running beating player after player and set up Pastor to drill a shot home to finish the match making it 4-0. On 91 minutes Abadias took the ball down well on the left and crossed into the box for Zubillaga but Rodriguez had a handful of his shirt and the referee awarded the penalty. Zubillaga buried it into the top left corner to make it 4-1 ending the match with a consolation goal for any Zaragoza supporters unfortunate to still be in the stadium.

DF: This is our worst performance of the season and we have seen a mental collapse from the players at this stage of the season. It's crucial we don't fall apart from here on out but I can see why this club has failed to be promoted in so long due to this. We have all the talent at our disposal but we are mentally fragile.

Real Zaragoza vs Real Mallorca
19th April 2036

=Mallorca result.webp

Points were needed if Zaragoza were to stay within the play-offs in the crucial part of the season. Emilio Alvarez was named at left back and on 8 minutes his deadly cross into the box bounced clear of the defence and Richard Alonso marked his return with a side footed shot into the back of the net! Zaragoza looked better defending set-pieces with Juan making some good clearances. On 38 minutes Genis sent the ball long for Santos and he had Perez slipping all over the pitch as he slotted past Martinez to equalise. With 25 minutes to go, Ferguson tried something different and introduced Agustin Noya for his senior debut. The winger had just turned 17 a week ago and got his chance when he replaced Chus Abadias. It wasn't to be for either team and a 1-1 draw was the final result.

Elche vs Real Zaragoza
27th April 2036

=Elche result.webp

Robert Cobos and Ioseba Flano both returned to action following recent injuries. A win for Zaragoza will give them a four point gap over Lugo just outside the play-off places but a defeat could really spell trouble for Los Blanquillos. Javi lumped the ball forward inside the first minute and Zubillaga chased it down, there was a coming together with Morales and it looked like Zubillaga took a tumble, the referee awarded the penalty! Zubillaga went to the top right but it was saved in style by the keeper! Justice was served. Richard Alonso came forward on 8 minutes and with no options he took the shot and struck the outside of the post. Since the penalty miss, Zubillaga was having a poor match, he was replaced on 55 minutes for Xavier Alvarado. Alvarez knocked it to Donkor and he played a long ball forward for Alvarado, he tried to chip the keeper and he caught it easily. Why didn't he play it around him? Elche lost the ball outside the Zaragoza box and it was played right to Alonso, he got down and ran forward, played it across the pitch to Abadias, he rolled it into the box and Alvarado done all he could to get to it and nudge it past the keeper on 89 minutes! Surely that's the winning goal? If Zaragoza can hang on throughout stoppage time then this will be a huge win. Elche were pushing numbers forward but it's Zaragoza's day and they go ahead of Lugo by four points!

Statement from Thiago Limon

Firstly I would like to thank all supporters for their continued support of the team in the 2035/36 season. It has been a very good season so far and we are hopeful the club can once again regain their top flight status. There are six matches to play and we are in a very good league position. Our aim at the start of the season was clear: To qualify for the play-off round. Duncan Ferguson and his coaching team have done a terrific job in implementing a new playing style. A style which is not found within Spanish football and he has made Zaragoza a difficult team to play against. We have experienced some topsy-turvy league finishes over the years with a third place finish in 2032 being our highest in decades. We have high expectations of finishing this season as high as we can and if we do achieve a play-off position, we will fully support Duncan and his team to see it through.

The club finances are healthy although we have recorded a loss of €293,070. The overall balance of the club is positive and we will continue to recoup what we can through player sales. There will be additional money for the club to spend on new players this summer and a wage budget to help attract new talent. We are very pleased with our academy performances and we have bright prospects ready to step up to first team duties. I would also like to briefly mention the status of the club and that no offer has been made to myself to buy ownership. As things stand, I am still the chairman and owner of the club and if there are any changes, the supporters of this great club will be first to know.
