Former Everton Centre Forward Duncan Ferguson steps into management.....

Sporting Gijon vs Real Zaragoza
1st June 2036

The penultimate game of the season and with Zaragoza's play-off place confirmed they can aim to finish higher up the table with a strong finish to the season. Zaragoza were rocked with the news of injury to two key players; Carlos Romero and Juan Carlos Perez. It was a chance for Hector Ormad and Marco Cabarcos to come in and keep Zaragoza in their fine run of current form. It was a nervy start from Zaragoza and the defence took time to find their feet. Cabarcos settled in next to Javi and Galindo was playing well at right back. Ferguson stated before the match that it's about keeping the momentum going into the play-offs and will continue to field the strongest side possible. Alberto Ruiz got in too easily down the left and got a cross into the box for Feminias to scissor kick past Chus and make it 1-0. Femenias took the corner a few minutes later and the flick on from Ruiz to Sicart found its way into the net to double Gijon's lead. Richard Donkor never made it back out for the second half and was replaced by Zubillaga in a bid to salvage the game. Ruiz was proving hard to play against and when the ball came into the box, Cabarcos pushed him down resulting in a penalty to be given. Ricardo placed his kick down the middle and put the game out of sight making it 3-0. Alonso done well getting down the right side and his pass was sublime for Cobos but he struck the post in Zaragoza's best effort yet. Juan was getting stuck in late in the game and won the ball back well for Zaragoza, Ormad picked it up and searched out Alonso on the right and he threaded a nice ball through into the box for Zubillaga who squared it for Alvarado and he buried it to claw a goal back with 11 minutes to go. It got worse for Zaragoza when Juan had to go off injured on 90 minutes. The extent of the injury unknown but it couldn't have come at a worse time.

DF: We fell apart in the space of about three minutes and the game was gone. I'm concerned about the play-offs considering we have got a few injuries to players, Romero, Juan and Perez are going to be out for the next 3 weeks. If we needed a bit of luck, it's now. I've just heard Ledson is injured now too, he's due to return back to us and would have been useful at the play-off stage.

Real Zaragoza vs Cadiz
8th June 2036

It was the last league match of the season and Ferguson brought in Alvarez and Manzella in the full back positions. Ormad and Silva formed an unlikely partnership in midfield. It was far too easy for Cadiz on 8 minutes, the ball over the defence from Garcia to Bengoetxea to finish was executed perfectly and the defence stood still. Chus played the ball out to Cabarcos on 28 minutes and his kick forward was won by Cadiz, Tirado took the ball down the left and a sublime ball into the box for Bengoetxea to volley in his second made it 2-0. A few minutes later it was made worse for Zaragoza and Idowu delivered into the box for Blanco to smash into the back of the net. Ferguson made an instant change and Cabarcos was replaced by Navarro, Cabarcos got in the face of Ferguson on the line and the manager completely ignored him. The second half started better for Zaragoza, Alvarado was replaced by Zubillaga with 35 minutes to go and they were getting forward more. Cadiz made it difficult for Zaragoza and they got forward on the counter, Garcia's low pass into the box deflected off Navarro and Idowu slotted in the fourth. Flano played in Zubillaga on 74 minutes and his shot was parried by the keeper. The fans began to leave the stadium, it was too much for them to watch. The whistle is blown in an empty stadium as Zaragoza fall to an embarrassing defeat.

DF: It's a terrible way to end the season. We should be celebrating the play-offs with our supporters but we let them down with an awful defeat. We find out who we play in a few days time and we need to be ready mentally. It is going to be tough, we are up against tough opponents. I need 110% from everyone going into the biggest matches of their playing careers.

Real Zaragoza vs Villarreal
Play-Off Semi-Final First Leg
11th June 2036

Zaragoza suffered play-off heartache in last season's play-off final against Atletico Pamplona with a 2-1 defeat in the second leg. Carlos Romero and Juan Perez are big losses for Zaragoza this evening and will be up against it against Villarreal who are looking to regain their top flight status. Eugenio Alvarez and Israel Silva linked up in midfield, Jose Zubillaga started in attack and Ferguson kept Cabarcos in defence despite coming in for some criticism over the last two weeks. Ferguson doesn't believe Navarro or 17 year old Pujolar are ready for such a game but Hector Ormad is on the bench. Igor Martinez returned to the line-up after being unfavoured to Chus. Donkor took the ball on 13 minutes and played a nice pass into the path of Alonso who ran at the defence and drilled a shot low from inside the area beating the keeper to his right and making it 1-0 in the first leg! Abadias ran down the left and crossed into the box just before half-time but his cross was cleared, Donkor took the ball down and being urged to shoot he had a go and it was deflected just wide of the post. Zaragoza went in at the break with a dream start in this tie but a minute into the second half and Emilio Alvarez put in a great tackle in the box but Moreno reacted first and slotted low to make it 1-1. Villarreal were throwing their bodies on the line when Zaragoza were trying to take shots at goal, it was a good end to end match with both defences performing well. Alberto Gomez found space down the left and lobbed the ball towards goal, it took an awkward bounce and went in to give Villarreal the lead! There was a scramble between Martinez and Moreno as the ball crossed the line and replays show Moreno was impeding Martinez for the goal. The assistant referee flagged and the referee had a chat with him, the decision was to rule the goal out for a foul on Martinez! Richard Donkor played it to Flano on 88 minutes and he took an optimistic shot from about 35 yards which was an inch wide of the post. It's a draw at half-time in this match and it's not a bad result for Zaragoza to take to Villarreal in four days time.

DF: I feel we could have won it today, we had more about us but Sunday will be the real test when we play at their place.

Romero, Perez and Juan were still out with injury and if Zaragoza were to get through tonight they would be available for the final. Richard Donkor hit a hopeful shot on 9 minutes and the keeper done well to turn it round the post. Abadias took the corner towards the far post and Zubillaga leaped high to power in the header! What a goal and Zaragoza lead! Zubillaga had another chance on 26 minutes but his free-kick was saved in style by Vidal. Villarreal were not going to give up and put Zaragoza under some pressure before the end of the first half, Nicolas crossed in from the right and Martinez went up with Jacobo and Cabarcos came from nowhere and sent him into the stands, penalty given to Villarreal and a talking to for Cabarcos about his conduct. Former Zaragoza player Cobo went up against Martinez putting the kick to the top left and Martinez kept it out! What a save! Nicolas came down the right and crossed low for Jacobo and this time he didn't miss tucking it past Martinez on 51 minutes. Jacobo was a threat in the air but Javi dealt with him well, Martinez made some good saves and kept Zaragoza in the game. Minutes remained in the match and Zaragoza needed to find that winning goal. There was a moment of nerves in the last seconds as Martinez came to collect the ball and Cabarcos kicked it away, Jacobo took it down on the left of the box and Galindo was harsh in the challenge and gave away the free-kick. Jacobo whipped it in and it went over everyone in the box and Alvarez got it clear. The whistle is blown and it is now decided in 30 minutes of extra time. Cobos came on for Abadias and inside the first half Donkor was complaining of an injury ands was replaced by Alvarado. Zaragoza could not be faulted for their excellent defensive work and were dealing with everything thrown at them. Zaragoza had a rare chance in extra time and Alavarado done well to come deep to get the ball, he passed it back to Flano and Flano played a lovely ball through the defence for Zubillaga to finish and he struck the post! Zaragoza needed to find the winner, if the match ends 1-1 Villarreal will go through as they are the highest seeded team between the two sides. Cabarcos pumped the ball long in the last few seconds but it was too far for Alvarado and the referee brought the encounter to an end. It's a tough result for the Zaragoza players to take but they can take heart from this performance and they can certainly go again next season.

DF: Seeing my players drop to the floor at the whistle shows how much it meant to them. Young Alvarado was in tears and he really did work hard for us. We can't dwell on it, we lost to a side with quality all over the pitch and they are a top side, we matched them in both games and showed our true character. We need to keep fighting on in this division next season, we still have a great chance to get promoted and we aren't going to give up.
