DUNCAN FERGUSON INTERVIEW
Duncan Ferguson took time out of his schedule to sit down with the media team from Real Zaragoza fan TV to talk about the upcoming season.
RZTV: Duncan, thank you for sitting down with us, it is an honour to have you managing our club. Did last season go as well as you expected?
DF: Play-offs was the aim for the season, it was always part of my objectives to reach the play-off round but as the season went on we looked good enough to be pushing for automatic promotion. Zubillaga's injury hit us quite hard in the search for goals that could have won us games and he never really got back up to speed when he came back. That's not solely the reason why we didn't win as many as we'd liked but we also lacked quality in depth in key areas. This season I feel like we have got that addressed but it's still quite difficult when you can only register 23 outfield players.
RZTV: What are the aims for this season? Surely now it has to be promotion? Do you think the new owners and the fans would settle for play-offs as a minimum?
DF: Promotion is our aim and we need to be tight to the top two. It's not easy when Valladolid and surprisingly, Sevilla have been relegated. They two teams with big stature in the game and Sevilla are being touted as comfortable favourites to bounce back. We need to be competitive, we need to be better than last year and we need to be consistent.
RZTV: You got your business done early in the window and we got to see the new players in pre-season. We are quite excited by Rittmuller and Jorge in midfield, are you confident these players can come in and hit the ground running?
DF: We've all seen Jorge haven't we? He's a class young player and we are delighted to bring him in. Rittmuller is incredible. He has so much intelligence in his football and does the most amazing things in training, I can't wait for you to see him in action this season.
RZTV: It's good to see a lot of our younger players go out on loan to get experience, we look like we have a bright future with the talent at the club. Is there a process for them to break through?
DF: No process as such, we have a good coaching team at the club and when a player is ready he will get his chance. Agustin Noya made his debut last season and was around the first team training. He's gone out on loan now to get more football under his belt. The same applies to all, if you impress at youth level and on loan spells then you can get your chance.
RZTV: What was the story with Andrew Ledson?
DF: Andy struggled to settle in, in Spain. He came here as a 19 year old and it's a massive adjustment for some. I think it affected his game and his loan spell wasn't enjoyable for him either. Luckily we got a call from QPR who have just been promoted to the Premier League and now Andy has a massive chance to be playing in the best league in the world. He's a good player who can achieve a lot in his career, the timing for him to come to Spain just wasn't right.
RZTV: What are your own plans? We know you are an Everton fan, do you still keep up to date with what they are doing?
DF: Of course! I follow their results and have done since I left all those years ago. They've struggled again recently but I think under Klopp they can reach Europe again and finish high up in the league.
RZTV: Last question, what about Fylde?
DF: I follow them too, Fylde are also a big part of my career and we had so many ups and downs! They're a pretty well established League One team and many memories were made there. I keep in touch with the players who came through under me and spent their careers with the club. Morgan Feeney left the game completely, I'm not sure what he is up to now. Euan Henderson has just retired from playing and is starting a career in management. I chat to him quite a bit about football and he's looking for his first job.
