Former Everton Centre Forward Duncan Ferguson steps into management.....

FYLDE ACADEMY GRADUATES

I was invited along to Fylde's training complex in Kirkham to meet the Academy graduates to the first team. Upon arrival, I notice there wasn't much change to the facilities when I met Duncan Ferguson here. Walking through the building I saw Sarah Carr conducting pre-season fitness tests on Stewart Milby and John Tomaszko. I said a quick hello before being directed to the Conference Room to meet with the graduates from the U23 and U18's side, 16 year old Central Defender Elliot Richardson and 17 year old Attacking Midfielder Warren Hodge. Both were local lads and had came through the clubs youth academy from a young age and had been impressing at a youth level for the last season. There was a lot of hype building around them but not yet on a regional or National level. Euan Henderson had them join first team training with the opportunity to be a part of the first team this season.

It's a pleasure to meet you both, how are you finding your first few weeks training with the first team?

Elliot: Finding it ok, we've been out this morning having 5-a side games and was back in the gym this afternoon for weights and doing some functional fitness.

Warren: It's good to be part of the first team too and to be around the experience within this squad. The gaffer took me to one side and told me to study Vince Bytheway's game and Vince himself has been great in passing on advice. It's not easy though and they are showing us how competitive it is at first team level but most of the lads have been fine with us.

What are your expectations for the season?

Elliot: I hope to be in the manager's plans but for me it's about taking any opportunity I'm given and making a name for myself. It's going to be hard getting into the team and staying there but as long as I can make a contribution and be ready for when I'm called on.

Warren: I agree with Elliot, it's about taking the chance and giving it your all. We haven't featured for the first team yet but we did go to Crewe last season on the coach and that indicated we could be part of the first team plans this season.

Barry Corr speaks very highly of you both and thinks you can go on to be very good footballers and possibly play at a higher level, what do you think about that?

Elliot: For me, it's about the now and doing all I can now. Whatever happens, happens really and it's good just to focus on the here and now and enjoy it.

Warren: Barry has been excellent with me and he sat down and has gave me some pointers on how to improve, getting into the box and how to be effective from corners and free-kicks. I don't take them myself but he has taught me more about positional awareness and being effective that way.

It's not often we have academy prospects stepping up to the first team and especially ones with the talent you've got. I'll be looking forward to catching up with you both during the season to find out how you are finding it and I want to wish you all the very best for the season.

Duncan was a visionary when he set up the club's academy. If only we had listened to him all those years ago when he told us about the earth warming up...

TRANSFERS IN

After a busy January transfer window, the summer one was more quiet with only three incomings on permanent deals. Fylde took advantage of loans and extended Neil Hakeem, David Hill, Francis Johnson, Justin Brooks and Anthony Barrett for another season.

Tommy Smyth (£8k)

This could be the deal of the century as Henderson moved quickly to bring his former player Tommy Smyth from Dollingstown. Smyth, who is now 18 was signed for Dollingstown by Euan Henderson and he went on to make 47 appearances for The Dolly Birds. Henderson stated he was one of the brightest talents he had ever seen and moved for him in the transfer window bringing him over to Fylde. Smyth, who is considered shy and very level headed was overjoyed with the move to England and could not be happier. "To get the chance to play in the Football League at a top club is more than I ever imagined at my age." Smyth has gone from strength to strength. "I'll put my arm around him" Said Henderson, "Tommy is gifted and we will nurture him here. He has come to a good club with very good coaches and a team full of professionals who want to do well. It's our aim to get the best from Tommy and I can't wait for the supporters here to witness what he can do." Tommy Smyth is definitely a name to keep an eye on this season.

Ollie Bellairs (£475k)

Ollie is a player who Fylde will remember. He was intrumental in getting Ipswich into the play-offs and promoted to The Championship. Henderson acted quick to get his man and Ipswich could not turn down the offer and the transfer was done early. He will be an exceptional player on the left wing anSad he plays like a traditional winger. He is quick, left foot dominant and can put in a good cross. He could be the answer to Fylde's problems this season and will provide competition to Nick Kennerdale and Chris Moffatt.

Sam Pride (Free)

At 35 years old, many fans were not sure about this deal but Henderson wanted the experience in Central Midfield. Pride spent 12 seasons of his career with Nottingham Forest and made 20 Premier League appearances in 2036/37. He dropped down to The Championship with Cardiff City and after a two year deal his contract was not renewed. Sam has intelligence and could be the orchestrator Fylde need in the centre. He is capable of slotting in at Right Back if required and with 464 league appearances to his name, he could be the player that keeps the calm when things don't go so well.

TRANSFERS OUT

Duncan Smith (£21k Plymouth Argyle)

Duncan Smith spent two seasons at Fylde but only managed one league appearance for the club in that time. A back strain kept him out for a few weeks and he failed to make progress in the team after the injury. Henderson came to the club and he wasn't part of his first team plans.

Dominic Kidby (loan Dulwich Hamlet)

Dominic Kidby was Henderson's first signing last season and spent the remainder of the season playing for the U23's. At only 21, the left back is still considered part of Henderson's long term plans and a season long loan to Dulwich Hamlet would be a positive move. Dulwich Hamlet have just been promoted to the Football League for the first time in their history.

SEASON REVIEW 2039/40

With a lack of summer signings, Fylde retained players on loan deals and brought in players from the youth team who are likely to feature for The Coasters at some point this season. After last season's tenth place finish, the media have predicted a top six finish for Fylde but they will have to be consistent in what is anticipated as another crucial, competitive season. Oldham Athletic, Birmingham City and Notts County come down from The Championship and Bury, Ebbsfleet, Coventry and Charlton come up from League Two. Brentford missed out on promotion last season after leading the table for most of the season. They were beaten in the play-off final by Ipswich Town who surged into the play-offs late on. Grant Thomas finished as the league's top scorer with 21 and he will be looking to better it this season. Portsmouth have spent the most money so far bringing in Nic Ballinger from Fulham for £750k. Brentford remain the title favourites who possess a Championship quality side but will have to be wary of complacency once again.
