In that case it would be cheaper. If no deal could be agreed between the clubs then any settlement for breach of contract and enticement to breach contract would be very meagre to compensate a club for something they put little book value in.

the breach of contract you speak of may be limited in a civil claim - but I think the FA and Premier League would take a very different view when assessing fines/points deductions on Everton.

I don't know any details about Lampard or anyone else but a manager who has been sacked could still cost money depending on the terms of their contract settlement with their previous club.
