2021/22 Frank Lampard

There was no message to give, we were going up the gears.
...recklessly so. And we paid for it because 'going up the gears' might feel good up front, but when you have a clueless kid at the heart of defence completely exposed one-v-one with an experienced forward it can bite you on the arse.

We didn't need a 2nd or 3rd though did we?

One nil up and players behind the ball and us able to counter attack an overstretched Brentford would have been perfect as a tactic to adopt.

Lampard just didn't get that message on the pitch and we lost 3 points because of it...just as we lost 3 points at Burnley.

In theory no one needs a 2nd. In reality a 2nd or 3rd completely kills Brentford who before the red card didn't want anything to do with this match. We are not good to go down a gear in the hope we can defend for 80 mins

We got a second...and we lost...because we had a man sent off.

It was a needless shot to the foot.

As much as I am not a fan of Lampad, that's just nonsense. We were so on top, the 2nd was coming may be a 3rd. We could have easily adopted a more conservative approach once the job was done. Branthwaite was a idiot twice, first for getting out by a long ball then compounded by committing a stupid foul. Had Toney scored we could have easily too back the advantage with 11 on the field
Had the ref not made two absolute clangers we win that match. Pull on Richy before the stupid red from Branthwaite, penalty. Second yellow for their defender on our pen

Lampard spent the bulk of his career playing for teams who were always on the front foot and would go for a second and third once they got the lead - except England, obviously.

I sometimes think he defaults to that attitude and then remembers too late that these Everton players are second rate by comparison to what he was and who he played with.

He has over-committed us far too often at times - and then went the diametric opposite at Watford last week. He overcompensated. He got the balance completely wrong again on Sunday after the sending off when Gomes should have been pulled immediately and legs put on in his stead. My biggest worry is he does not get the balance right against anybody other than sides far better than us who dominate the ball. Then, by default, we have no choice but to sit deep, which suits us and people like Michael Keane.

We really need Palace to turn up not arsed on Thursday, get a goal after about an hour, and sit deep for the last 30 to fall over the line. But please no early lead, gung-ho attack, and then get caught on the break by Zaha or Seamus Coleman's backside.

To be fair I was worried about the Watford, Brentford and Palace games, to my mind mate we aren’t creative enough and lack quality when we have to take the innititive and impose ourselves, if I look at the season these are the games we can’t cope with or get results, we rarely have. Our success has come containing and countering. I think that the tools we have.

Maybe the manger tries to test those limits as you say, he wants to be on the front foot by nature, but I’m not sure we can or should play differently, however in the dynamic of a game sometimes we have to try, when others come here and had in the initiative.

I think he’s going against his nature and I think reading it is a developing skill of his, we could have managed some games like Burnley and the weekend better, but we have managed some games well, depending on the dynamic of the game. If you speak to Chelsea fans a critique would be he’d go for 3-2 win, when a 2-2 was on the table in big games, often loosening 3-2 as a result. Like I say I think it’s a developing skill.
Only way we can get results currently is try and stay solid and go on counter attacks yes even at home. I think he realised this after we played Palace in the cup. He is obviously a bit tactically naive. But you also can't account for individual mistakes we have some brain dead players. And as you say we don't have a midfield that can dominate the ball. I would suggest that's the best tactic against Palace with their pace sit deep contain and strike on them. I would also play three in midfield personally. We will miss Delph again. Again a squad with one DM who is never fit, is a bad squad.

Some of the games we've won we've had hardly any possession. Chelsea 22%. Man utd 33% leicester 33% so im not sure how you come to that conclusion.
I come to that conclusion by looking at how we blew leads against Burnley and Brentford (though that one had mitigating circumstances) and going with a high line at Spurs only to be blown away.

The games we won with little possession - against Chelsea, United, and Leicester - were won precisely because he COULDN'T over-commit us or because he had learned from the Spurs madness (which is to his credit). Basically, our players are better as as a counter-attacking side that sits very deep. Michael Keane is actually a very competent defender when defending his six-yard box. He is hopeless in a high line further up the pitch as he has no pace.

I think we're actually more suited to getting something at Arsenal (if we weren't under such enormous pressure) than we are against Palace (who won't attack us in the same way). On Sunday, Lampard's over-commitment came in not replacing the sloth-like Gomes with legs. He was definitely restricted in his options, but Gomes was an indulgence that just cannot be afforded as he is, essentially, a passenger. At Watford, Frank overcompensated by being too defensive against a reserve team.

I have some sympathy for him. These players are generally an utter disgrace. I just hope he can find this critical balance tomorrow night.

Burnley and spurs were still quite early in his time here. Any manager needs time to assess what he has to work with. He clearly wouldnt go to spurs now and play like that as he knows we havent got the players. I wouldnt really expect any manager to walk into a club and get everything right straight from the beginning. Esp this sh!t show of a club.
This isnt pro lampard. Its me looking in on this job and realising how tough it is. Our only strength right now seems to be in your face grit and passion. There is so little quality to work with that what we've all been looking at for it seems weeks is the passion of Goodison to keep us up.
Some of the comments about brentford i thought were mad. All the "he got it wrong" merchants about playing with 10 men. You seen teams going down to 10 men hanging on at times with late ish cards..You rarely see them doing it for virtualy the whole game.
Very easy sitting on our arse saying that should have been done. Different in reality for that long.

Have to say, it would be completely mad to sack Lampard.

This squad, as things were going under Benitez, would have been relegated already.

He's bonded the team and fans back together and dug out wins against Newcastle, Man U , and Chelsea that we'll all look at as turning points if we finish the job on Thursday.

We need a young coach that 'gets it', like Moyes did in a remarkably similar situation in 2002. Consistency of process is key if we are ever going to move forward as a club and look to the European positions again.

His age had absolutely no relevance to that challenge, the kid has been playing football long enough. it happens, why people think it happened because he is young baffles me, it really does. It was an unfortunate coming together, it happens to 36 year olds also.

I really want lampard here to rebuild, we have a cracking coaching team, it would be daft to tear it up when they've not even had a pre-season and fresh start.
