2021/22 Frank Lampard

Think the reason for Gomes was that he played a blinder in the other home game against Brentford, and thought we'd have more of the ball at home, no good playing 2 holding midfielders in a game we were expected to win
Tbh he looked okay for the period we had 11 on the pitch. Then it all fell apart for him I feel, sadly.

Thought it's weird and wasn't exactly full of optimism, but he was alright to begin with.

Yeah i thought he looked ok, they must have had a game plan worked out, well drilled, but it all went out the window with an early red, i bet they didnt plan before the game what to do if a CB gets center off.

I agree with this mate, he's a developing manager, who naturally wants to play on the front foot, a lot of Chelsea fans would critique that he had a lot to learn in terms of game management, that's not me being critical just that a i think their is validity in your observation, its a tough gig at the moment though.
After the Burnley game he seemed to be converted to playing in a cautious way, digging in and creating a chance or two that he knew one of them would take.

Even against Watford he kept that methodology. Then that game against Brentford he chooses to let them off the leash smelling blood in the water after we scored early.

I think he was spooked before the game when Leeds got an equaliser. If they hadn't I'm pretty sure he'd have set up deep again and looked for a point or better playing on the break.

He just didn't handle the atmosphere on Sunday.

Lampard spent the bulk of his career playing for teams who were always on the front foot and would go for a second and third once they got the lead - except England, obviously.

I sometimes think he defaults to that attitude and then remembers too late that these Everton players are second rate by comparison to what he was and who he played with.

He has over-committed us far too often at times - and then went the diametric opposite at Watford last week. He overcompensated. He got the balance completely wrong again on Sunday after the sending off when Gomes should have been pulled immediately and legs put on in his stead. My biggest worry is he does not get the balance right against anybody other than sides far better than us who dominate the ball. Then, by default, we have no choice but to sit deep, which suits us and people like Michael Keane.

We really need Palace to turn up not arsed on Thursday, get a goal after about an hour, and sit deep for the last 30 to fall over the line. But please no early lead, gung-ho attack, and then get caught on the break by Zaha or Seamus Coleman's backside.

To be fair I was worried about the Watford, Brentford and Palace games, to my mind mate we aren’t creative enough and lack quality when we have to take the innititive and impose ourselves, if I look at the season these are the games we can’t cope with or get results, we rarely have. Our success has come containing and countering. I think that the tools we have.

Maybe the manger tries to test those limits as you say, he wants to be on the front foot by nature, but I’m not sure we can or should play differently, however in the dynamic of a game sometimes we have to try, when others come here and had in the initiative.

I think he’s going against his nature and I think reading it is a developing skill of his, we could have managed some games like Burnley and the weekend better, but we have managed some games well, depending on the dynamic of the game. If you speak to Chelsea fans a critique would be he’d go for 3-2 win, when a 2-2 was on the table in big games, often loosening 3-2 as a result. Like I say I think it’s a developing skill.

It's fine gambling a bit in a game. Nothing wrong with that. But not at this time with this team. They can only get wins by defending together and capitalising on the opposition over stretching themselves.

There's been games where Lampard forgets the lessons he seemingly learned after Spurs then after Burnley...it's been VERY costly for us.

That said, I think he's galvanised this team as best he could. They are not his players and he's very much working with tools he is having to adapt himself as he's gone along. Mykolenko and Iwobi have been transformed under him and that's a good sign for the future...if we stay up.

Some of the games we've won we've had hardly any possession. Chelsea 22%. Man utd 33% leicester 33% so im not sure how you come to that conclusion.
Saturday we were on top when it was a level playing field. 6 attempts at goal to their 1 by the time of the red card. Im really finding it tiresome all the experts coming out and claiming how he got it wrong to play a side a man short with 70 minutes left. I think thats hard enough for decent teams let alone one with so many average players who struggle to do the basics.
This isn't an easy job even for a vastly experienced manager. Benitez and even ancelotti in the end found that out.
I have no idea if lampard will be good or bad in the long run but we should run with him not being perfect after walking into a club with possibly the worst recruitment in this league over the past 4 to 5 years. And i dont say that lightly. We're an awful side ability wise. All i think we have is grit and passion and he's getting that in most games now.

Agree with all that mate, I like him for the exact reason you’ve said.

If we do this and stay up, I think he has big job of work ahead of him, transitioning and adding quality and specifically creativity to this playing squad is going to be like turning an oil tanker around. But you know he’s charismatic, enthusiastic, an icon and a name - I think he would be very good at attracting players or rather selling them the project as they say in new money.
