We have been 12th or above 18 times out of the last 20 seasons.

In now way would i except 17th this season.

There is absolutely nothing between the teams from 8th and 17th place in this league, all you need is half decent manager (which we never had last year) and a bit of luck with injuries and decisions.
Regardless of what business we do i would expect us to be around 10th-12th and comfortable.
Great post that. I think 12th would be progress and I'd accept 12-15 if:

- we have some kind of cup run in League or FA
- we bring in more youth for a load of games (as we have Gordon), like 30-40% of games starting 1-2 youth players
- we cull a lot of the squad crap accumulated this and next summer.
- we keep stadium on track

That is then a platform for Frank to build on. Right now we're still building that base.

12th - 15th for me is fine with the caveats;

-- Gordon and Patterson starters
-- Branthwaite involved in 20 games
-- Use Dele
-- Bring on 2 or 3 of the u23s
-- Sell alot now and in Jan
-- Hard to beat

Then in 2023/2024 season we may find we have 5 u23 starters in the team.

Start the rebuild now and aim for 2-3 years time before adding the top stars.

how can we finish 17th and get better?" The answer is by growing our young players (which also requires signing some, we hardly have any) and working toward a consistent style of play.
Time to wheel out my favourite football quote again.

Arsene Wenger: You pay for young players with points.

Like you, I don't mind where we end up so long as its in the division, provided we see some definition in a style of play and development of younger players we can either build around Or sell to reinvest.

Moshiri said 6 years ago we have a very small window to catch up with the leading clubs, he tried to spend his way into that and failed miserably. I'm hoping they now realise the only way to catch up is by following an agreed strategy that gives incremental growth.

Surely thats an oxymoron?

If we finish anywhere near 15th then we mustn't be too hard to beat Zat mate lol

We finished 16th last season because the club was undone by sabotage.

That is the truth of the matter. Last season was exceptional circumstances.

If we're all pulling in generally the same direction we have nothing to fear.

The players will respond and we'll be midtable...just about where this team as it stands should rightly be.

We are not the club we were 20 years ago, people need to get over it, the league has change and whilst others moved on we didn't. We are a mid table club at the moment.

Moshiri has cratered us and sent us back 20 years. The next few seasons will be a slog make no mistake about that, hopefully as boring as possible and nothing like what we’ve had to go through this year. It’s about re stabilising the club and stopping the free fall while we get our finances in order.

I agree there Mr Buttle however... we cant moan about standards being low at the club whilst accepting 15th as an "acceptable" season - what message does that send from the fanbase?

Lampard's had 6 months with the squad and will have a full pre season to start building the team, he'll also likely have more funds to spend than both Benitez and possibly Ancelotti had (if we make a big sale) so the aim has to be a top half finish.

I would take 11th and signs of progress but anything lower would be underwhelming for a club of this size unless we got to a cup final.

Oh I agree and thats on top of the damage that Kenwright had already done, tbh I'm not sure we will ever catch up again I think things are too far down the line now.
