My feelings exactly.

This and the fact the one player who played a massive part in the siege mentality has been sold.

I think as it stands it will be printing money putting money on us going down

Rubbish.

Last season was a culmination of 5-6 factors together which caused what happened.

Nuts and bolts of it - we have a cf better than 13-14 other teams do, same with the keeper, same with CB imo.

We are a couple of midfielders short of being on the edge of European places

I put something similar a couple of days back, and just listed all of the tihngs that "went wrong" last season, that was almost freak events that seemed to come together. It was just a perfect storm. I mean off the top of my head

1) An injury crisis which was the worst in the league (including losing our best CB, key CF, only box to box midfielder and only goal scoring midfielder)

2) Losing a manager unexpectedly. Add to this a manager of Ancelotti's quality and experience.

3) The board not having a contigency plan for 2, and taking ages to make a decision.

4) Plumping for an unpopular choice

5) The unpopular changing the style completely and then losing the key players for that system (DCL/Doucoure) after a promising start (see 1)

6) Having only limited money to spend

7) The clubs biggest "sponsor" being sanctioned

8) The club being on the brink of FFP.

9) The DOF leaving mid season

10) Being bottom of the league for set peice goals and goals from individual mistakes.

11) Being on the recieiving end of numerous "mistakes" from FFP that have been acknowledged from the PGMOL.

There are probably more. And don't get me wrong you will always have some issues in a season, but if any side outside of the top 6, had 3/4 of the above issues, I suspect they'd be in a relegation battle. A lot of those problems have already been resolved as well. We are now, essentially ok with FFP. The sanctions have had time to sink in and we may even see club sold. We at least have a settled manager who will see us into next season.

I don't think the squad is brilliant but there's a reason why last season was a major outlier. Our range of points over a 20 year period is like 48-72. Most seasons we are between like 50-60. 39 points is a big outlier, a bit like if we got 87 points. It would be an outlier that wouldn't be kept up.

I had a look at those sides at the bottom of the injury list table as well, and bottom are Palace. I think Brentford are near the bottom too, and so are Tottenham. Generally teams deemed to have over performed, At the other end, us, Watford, Leeds etc. It makes a huge difference. Honestly, if we could go from 20th, to say top 5 on that table, it would be more important than any number of signings.

I know exactly what you are saying.

The injury crisis was insane. Every club would have struggled with a crisis like that.

We need 3 midfielders, a right back, a centre back and somebody who can cross a ball. We also don’t have the money to sign said players or an academy capable of producing said players

Philosophical question. Are teams rubbish because they have a lot of injuries or have a lot of injuries because they’re rubbish.

Leeds and Watford also lost huge amounts of time to injury.

chicken and egg situation?

Spot on
And very well thought out

I read a stat with a few games to go that Palace were the team who had the least injuries in the league. I think a lot of people expected them to struggle yet they were comfortable and had a cup run.

On the flip side few expected us or Leeds to struggle yet we got decimated by injuries and survived game 37 and 38 respectively.

So yeah, if you have bad luck with injuries you’re a lot more likely to be below your expected position and if you don’t you may find yourself higher. It’s why we can’t go into next season expecting Mina, Allan and DCL to play every game given recent records.

I mean, we have Tarkowki, who can partner Godfrey which is ok. We have to hope Patterson can fill the RB slot.

In midfield Doucoure is ok. Maybe Iwobi is ok but we do need a sitter.

Gordon can cross the ball. We are not as far off being an ok team as we might think.
