Our squad has not magically become stronger. We all hope it will but at the moment FL has to work with the players at his disposal.

The manager said recently he plays 5 at the back because of the type of player in his squad ie. he does not have the midfield that can play in front of a back four.

I think last night will have cemented that opinion so until we making signings I think we will be back to using 5 at the back.

I think last night was a big learning lesson for management and I think emphasis may not be as much on a defensive midfielder as it is a replacement for Richarlison.

The only thing we learned from last night is what we already know. The squad isn’t good enough and without signings in crucial areas this team is in for another relegation fight.
Not completely true.

We learned that based on the performances so far we seem better able to cope with 5 at the back as FL has previously said.

Keane and Tarkowski cut their teeth at Burnley and always defended deep which is what they're good at. Tarkowski signed more because he was free than because he's the style of defender Lampard would want.

Tarkowski was signed because he can actually defend a cross from live or dead play.
Never signed to play high line, because as Burnely found out and as you correctly identify he does not have legs, just like Keane. Why even try the high line with these as pair is boggling as it is worrying. Not naïve not stubborn was stupid.

We’ve looked absolutely terrible with a back 5 as well. I think you’re right, listening to him, sounds like this has cemented a back 5 as the go to approach. Yikes

You think a high line is what lost us that game against Burnley?

I don't think for one second it's all on the manager. You'd need some sort of hybrid of Clough and Ferguson to knock a tune out of this lot
but I was shocked at how they couldn't even do the basics and Lampard has to take some responsibility for that.

No mate he really doesn't need to take some really.

He trains them, along with clement whose by all accounts a top coach/trainer. They do it in training, once they step over the line it's on them to 'do the basics' - yes tactical set up, whose playing where etc is Lampard but them not being able to execute the simple fundamentals of the game is ALL on them.

Regardless of personnel at centre back, it is suicidal to play a high back line with our midfield. People keep saying it’s the defence, it isn’t.

Midfield put no pressure on the ball, they don’t get back into shape quickly when they lose it or alternatively press - any decent midfielder playing against that lot with a high back line has all the time on the world to pick a pass over the top/down the side or run straight at the back line.

A competitive midfield would go a long way to us playing further up the pitch - albeit players like Mina, Keane, Tarks don’t have lots of pace so are vulnerable in the set up - it’s just they’re not even being given a chance with the midfield.

Weird that as he tried to sign Tarkowski when he was Chelsea manager mate - so you would assume that he is in fact the style of defender - in fact the exact defender he wanted ?
