We replaced James Rodriguez with Andros Townsend in the summer and a fair proportion of the fanbase were happy about it

Losing Rodriguez and Sigurdsson at the same time really damaged us. I know the latter received a lot of hate on here but we have massively missed him.

Even 10 games for Rodriguez this season we would have seen a positive impact but i dont think we will ever know the full truth, i dont think he wanted to be here, benitez certainly didnt help.

Yes and while speculating let's also consider all the trophies he could have won but didn't by not telling the players they lacked bollocks when they lost.

Football is a game of fine margins, but that could have made all the difference...

I love how Lampard and the players still get a free pass because "it wuz Benitez"

We are now 17th

We've gone backwards if anything.

Playing Kenny at LB over Mykolenko

Playing Richarlison up top over King Salaman

Playing a high line away against Spurs

Not taking a 2-2 draw away at Burnley instead having our fullbacks pushed right up leading to their winner

Odd substitutions / lack of proactive subs/changes.

Cock ups from the usual suspect players of ours like Keane and Holgate.

Inability from our medical team to keep our players fit.

If we go down Lampard and the players take as much of the blame as Benitez.

It's easy in hindsight. We would all have been kicking off if Rondon was in the starting 11 before kickoff.

I think we just need to accept we aren't good enough, regardless of who starts. I still believe our problems stem back to Martinez, when we started flooding the squad with players from clubs who had been relegated or were in and around the drop zone. It continued with koeman, Silva and benitez.

;)

Absolute disgraceful effort tonight.

Rondon to start next game.

Lampard has to go for Rondon or Dobbin. Rondon can at least offer some presence/hold ball up maybe and I've not got a clue about Dobbin but I assume he'd cause more of a nuisance/create some space.

Think we'll miss a trick tonight and go Richarlison upfront again.

For us, I think he's a lot better on the wing.

I'd actually have Rondon upfront. /legs it.

:p

I find it that a bit bonkers too.

Everton sacked Benitez on 16th January;

Everton have sacked manager Rafael Benitez after just six-and-a-half months in charge following Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Norwich.

The Toffees have won just once in the Premier League since September and are 15th in the table, six points above the relegation zone.

BENITEZ'S RECORD

Benitez inherited a team in freefall from Ancelotti too. We went to pot the second half of last season.

What was it? Something like Benitez first 15 games mirrored exactly Ancelotti's last 15? Considering the spine of the team was missing for Benitez too...

I think Benitez should have been sacked sooner - Crystal Palace away was the game for me. Misplaced loyalty from Moshiri and "WE CANT KEEP SACKING MANAGERS" did us no favours there.

But I think he'd have been more pragmatic away from home - Lampard come in with "enjoy the ball" and was trying to impose too much - throwing as much at the wall as he could hoping something stuck. Different setups every game - asking the team to push high at places like Spurs etc.

I'm glad he has switched the narrative that ugly football, pragmatic football is currently needed rather than "enjoy the ball...". He's started to say a lot about how fight, running etc is needed before better football - that needed to be day one really.

….not sure anybody gives him a free pass, I’ve certainly been very critical of him. I know others have.

Benitez, however, was the catastrophe appointment. He turned us from a bit of a joke club to one that is toxic, on and off the pitch. Lampard has failed to arrest the situation, there is no doubt about that.

I actually think Lampard instead of Benitez might have been ok as he’d have inherited a content group of players and staff that more than held their own last season. That baseline was sufficient for him to get things wrong and still win football matches, but he hasn’t had the ability to cure the rot Benitez installed.

Somebody might have been able to do it, but I have no idea who. Lampard, wrong man at the wrong time. Benitez just disastrous.

Not according to Richarlison who said he was training hard and didn't understand why he was offloaded

The issue with Rondon starting is can he last an hour or more. If he can't then he shouldn't start.

The issue with him not starting is we then have Richarlison upfront and we're not as good.

He looks a lot fitter now than he did, and if he can't last beyond the hour - switch it from then on.

Lampard has only just been praising Rondon's professionalism;

In my opinion - Richarlison leading the line isn't our best setup with this Everton team. He's more effective for us dropping into space and helping carry the ball.

100%. Richarlison out wide is a far more attacking threat then through the middle.

Gone Rondon a go, try and get Richarlison, Gordon, Iwobi around him for anything he wins and see how we get on.

We simply can't afford to be giving Richarlison any more games as a central striker.
