Not sure what you mean by the passage in bold. It definitely wasn’t ever a settled controversy.
Just mean most were willing to give him a chance once the decision was made - whether they liked it or not. I thought he’d play crap football and expected a real struggle to stay in the division but thought he’d need time to manage change.

I didn’t expect him to go about it like a megalomaniac on steroids. That was purely down to him as a person and his management style - that’s what gave me the big concerns about him and that it wasn’t going to work. Proved correct, demoralised the squad, they stopped playing for him, looked a beaten and dispirited bunch even before the matches kicked off, had to go.

Yes, I agree most gave him a chance - but many didn’t, and those that did (including myself) were always going to be a step further along the “sack him” road when things went south than we would’ve been with someone with a different heritage.

That’s just the tribal nature of football. As I said, not Benitez’s fault - and I’m sure he realised that going in.

I think we do ok against top teams. That's been the pattern for Lampard, so I dont see games at home aginst lesser lights as absolute must win games because we'll get nothing from Spurs or City or Arsenal.

We have to find a path to 40 points. We need 25 more from our 21 games. We've done ok on the road against decent teams like Brentford, Fulham and City. and if we can get another 10 points from that source (we got 6 points thus far away from home) then we can get 15 more at home and we should be ok...all assuming we get a forward through the door this January.
I mean, since Lampard came in we've taken 8 points from 11 games against the 'big 6', with an aggregate score of 19-5. It seems a little bit of a stretch to call that a pattern of doing OK if i'm honest.

I'm not saying tonight is a must win game, those games are very rare and it only really applies at the very end of the season. The point is simply that at some point we have to start winning games, and we won't have too many better chances than at home under the lights against a midtable side. A point tonight isn't a disaster, but it will be disappointing. A side which has only won 2 away games since the manager took over a year ago cannot afford to be going at a point a game at home.

This is the nail on the head.

We can't go into every game and only be disappointed when we don't win teams below us.

The league is full of average teams, any home game against these average teams we should be disappointed if we don't win

...now compare that to the records of other bottom clubs against those top 6 teams.

Why wouldn't I respond ? I'm not a rude person.
But you bring him up even when you’re not directly responding to a question about him, such as the below from yesterday:

I wouldn't say an excuse more being realistic. Lampards had the easiest gig of any EFC manager since Martinez who inherited that Moyes side - if we were 15th currently most fans would be content as expectations are so low.

If Benitez had us 15th there would be riots at Goodison. Thats ultimately the difference both managers walked into tough circumstances but one was doomed from the start whereas the other has a cheerleading club for doing the bare minimum.

The little plump kopite just lives in your spiritual head doesn’t he?‍♂️

Well that isn't what you were saying, and is actually completely unrelated to the point at hand, but the first team I looked at - Southampton - have 11 points from their last 11 against those 6, so 3 more than us.

Not this season they dont. 4 points so far: a win against Chelsea and a draw with Arsenal.

Ok so if we change the parameters (again), it's only 2 more than us. Do you want a bigger shovel?
You changed the aparameters, not me. You started this off by taking about the 10 home games left, and that 6 of them are against top teams.

I'm dealing with that by pointing out that last season we beat Arsenal, Chelsea and United at GP.

A win tonight would be a fantastic result; a draw would be acceptable.

I think the vast majority of Everton fans would agree with those statements.
I don't disagree with what you have said, but again although acceptable, you'd still be disappointed with only a draw tonight no?

If we don't win tonight, it's not a disaster but I'd 100% feel disappointed and edgy going into the Southampton game
