2022/23 Frank Lampard

He managed to keep us up by 4 points from this position:

Not a trophy or League title but I’d call that a success the way we had been playing.
I credit him with doing the bare minimum that was required: keep us up. This is what he was hired to do. But your table above is somewhat selective. He didn't take over when we had six matches to play. He was partly responsible for us being in that position in the first place - his team lost to Newcastle, Burnley, etc. So, credit to him for keeping us up - but he took over when we were out of the relegation zone and kept us in that position by the end.

Sure, but we’re playing with virtually no firepower at the moment. If we’re a month or two down the line and we’re struggling with fit strikers in the team, questions will be asked but until that point, I can’t make a fair judgement about this season. I can only look to last season and see that he did the job he was asked to do.

Residing over one of the largest overalls in club personnel for a long time, along with not much money and the usual crappy board. It’s on him yes, but I will reserve judgement until all the players he wants have been brought in and they have had time to gel together. This was never going to be a quick fix. One thing it does highlight though is the mismanagement of this club over the years when we have failed to replace important players that were sold or have come to the end of their careers.

13 games before the World Cup break. Need to be at the 20 point mark by then. Half way to safety with 21 games to go. So we need to up our game now because on current form we are nowhere near that mark.
18 from the next twelve fixtures seems incredibly optimistic, looking at them. We would have to beat Leeds, get something from the brutal run that starts up immediately afterward, and win at least three of the last four prior to the break against the league's weaker sides.

As a practical matter, if we're out of the relegation zone prior to the break I think he will be allowed to continue. Away to City is a lost cause, but I would feel good about getting four from the two home fixtures over Christmas and New Year's. Then, he has the rest of the season to sort it out. The schedule in the second half is a lot kinder than the first half, with us hosting many of the probable midtable sides, able to get something from the probable six-pointers away and having only one rough three-match stretch in the middle.

There are 12 league games to play before the WC break (16 games in to season). If Lampard continues his league form from the time he took over you will have 14 points. If he continues this seasons league form you will have 8 points. For reference, after 15 games last season Newcastle had 7 points, their first win coming in their 16th game. Start getting worried if you're in the bottom 3 and there are only 4 or 5 games to play in the season, but until then anything can happen.

It’s gonna be another 3 windows, of letting players go and completely revamping the squad. Some of these players maybe sticking players as part of a longer plan. I want to see progress. That might not equate to points early doors but if he keeps the work ethic and puts his stamp on the style of play then we have to give the process time. Christ we gave Benitez until the middle of January when we had one win from the beginning of September. With the right pegs in the right holes we can build something. We can’t build something by changing managers twice a year.

I’m not sure we can afford to assume we’ll just pick up all the points we need from a specific run of games. Aside from it never really working out like that, there’s also the possibility of going into a death spiral if we don’t start to pick up soon, where both players and fans lose faith in what’s happening. We need to avoid that if at all possible.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I am simply pointing out that "keeping the faith" makes no sense when there was no real "faith" to start with.

"Keep your fingers crossed" is more accurate, in my view.

Like Arteta?
Yeah, like Arteta. I mean, fair play, he went on to win a cup. But Arsenal have been winning cups all century. Can he get them into the Champions League? If so, then the decision to go with him has been rewarded - at least in the short-term. Until then, Arteta is still very much a punt.

I mean, I could just as easily reply to your "Like Arteta" with "Like Solskjaer?" or "Like Shearer?". And at least those two were legends of the clubs they went on to unsuccessfully manage. Lampard isn't even our legend. Time will tell if he was a better choice than, say, even Duncan Ferguson.

I hope he turns out to be - but I have no blind "faith" that he will be.

As I said in an earlier post, it's not about "keeping the faith". It's about keeping the fingers crossed.

This is true but I feel we are running out of truly woeful teams to help us out. There’s only Bournemouth this season.

Who do you suggest Everton football club hire, as a club that hasn't won anything this century, to be our manager then? I assume you want a name brand manager who can magically get us Top 6 in our current financial situation and with our current squad

I'll be needing a bit more than that, I'm afraid. He deserves his chance to build on keeping us up - so he has exhausted that capital as far as I'm concerned. When the window closes, he'll have basically recruited half a new team. So, let's see what he has about him as a manager.

Well what more could he have done to date? He had a job, he did his job.

Why do you say hes exhausted that capital? Because after 4 close games, with no striker?

I think we have to be prepared to give managers a lot more time than that. He deserves time once the window is closed and hes got his players in.

At this level, he needs to get more from the squad than the sum of its parts.

It's questionable what that amounts to, but after Thursday, it should at least amount to avoiding relegation.

You have to account for the lack of forward options, that's not on him, and I assume privately he is/was very displeased about that.

Seems he has the goodwill of almost everyone, and the support of most, but things can change very, very quickly on that front.

I'm a bit surprised to be honest at how soon the air of crisis has hit this season, but its results that dictate.

Results, results, results. The only show in town. He needs more of them regardless of circumstances.
