2022/23 Frank Lampard

Anyone with a trace of honesty regarded Newcastle away as a very hard game to get anything from, almost on a par with Spurs away. It the future clashes with teams around us in the bottom 8 which will be critical and will decide where we end up.
This. They have the best defence in the league. Are unbeaten at home, including having played Man City. They have lost once this season to Liverpool.

They are in form, and are one of the better teams so far this season. Yet people think we should have walked all over them. Yes they were poor yesterday and didn't look anything special, but their defence was still solid and didn't give much away.

it’s a one-off break point in the season, 16 games is it (?), and over a third of the season will be gone. If we’re not on at least 16 points, well, anything is possible with Moshiri at the helm. Palace, as it was last season, is massive.
I wouldn't say necessarily that the Palace game in isolation massive, but I think it's important that we get an acceptable number of points from this run of fixtures.

Nobody thinks this. Wildly exaggerating people's points in order to make yourself sound like the voice of reason doesn't help your cause, it hinders it.

You mean shooting off target. Great, I'll just take off all our points then because our defence pressured the strikers to missing the goal.
It is a valid point when assessing performances though.

While the defence has looked good in the Goals Against column that has been based on last ditch blocks, some excellent saves and good luck with opposition missing some gilt edged chances. Not always because of our defence pressurising strikers but just terrible misses and sometimes that little bit of luck where a ball is millimetres from going in off the post rather than rebounding out. Over the course of a season that isn't sustainable and will ultimately fail.

And on the flip side our Goals For column would look healthier with a couple of better passes in the final third and a decent finish or two.

Personally I don't think we're a million miles from being a competent mid-table side. Not a good side by any stretch of the imagination but something that should be capable of getting results against the teams in and around that mid-table and below.

Those stats point to luck. Highest shots conceded in the league. You think that's because we're a defensive unit?
Luck doesn't exist.

30% of the shots have come from out of the area. The stats don't show how many blocked shots there are. Don't show where in the box the shots are coming from.

Pickford has made 3.3 saves per game on average. Which puts him 8th. So yes, our defence is doing its job and its not "luck".

We had this conversation the other day. There are very few 'must win' games at any stage of the season, but it's not difficult to understand that the longer you go without putting a good run of results together, the more pressure will build. 2 wins out of 11 isn't good, it's very much in 'questions are going to be asked' territory, at some point those questions have to be answered, by winning games and getting points on the board.

I can't stress enough, I would only sack Lampard if things look seriously dire, because I think more upheaval is the last thing we need. I don't agree with just constantly defending everything he does and making out like everyone who isn't convinced is a bedwetter though, because I think at the moment the best you can say about the job he's done overall is that it's 'OK'. There are positives for sure, and if he can put some good runs together then that will obviously change, but currently the narrative that he's doing a really special job is genuinely bizarre.

Understandable.

Not saying he's doing a special job either. He's in the middle and needs time.

It's not wildly exaggerating. There were people thinking we should be expecting to beat them and there are people making claims that half their players are yard dogs (including players like joelinton who is actually pretty good for them).

Sadly this is where we are as a club right now. I have complete faith we will not be in a relegation battle this season and will probably finish about 12th-14th, I would have taken that at the start of the season.

We need continuity and Frank and his team are building solid foundations. Let's not forget how terrible we were last season. In the last three games we have lost we have not looked all over the place, the organisation is there, we will add goals soon. The league is still quite tight, put together a good run and who knows.
Totally agree

I've already posted this on what is probably the wrong thread, but the key thing now for Frank is getting some form of creativity into the side

DCL can't magic a goal from nothing, he needs the service

Maupay has always played in a 2 up top in a flowing attack. We play him up top on his own.

Over reliant on Gray beating 9 men. Gordon is massively out of sorts and ineffective.

Supply line is not there. The set up doesn't accommodate a striker.

Will need tweaking. I think the fullbacks don't get involved enough for one

The whole thing rests on the lack of quality movement up front. Fix that and we get goals and the rest of the team can relax and play better.

we need both tho dave, it’s that area we need to get better
We have the worst attacking options in the PL with Maupay, Rondon and Calvert-Lewin.

It's all down to that. There were two or three gilt-edged chances created yesterday and they weren't snapped up.
