Just for reference when does "he succeeded the worst manager who we all hate" stop becoming an excuse for mediocrity?
It isn't an excuse for mediocrity.
Anybody with even a basic understanding of football could see exactly what Lampard said last season: As a team we lacked bollocks.
Mr. Benitez (despite his much lauded linked in profile of success) didn't identify this and figured a couple of wingers was all that's needed.
Even though Lampard had a budget this summer, it's quite telling that our first signing was a freebie. Coady later arriving on loan was an unreal bonus.
Everton are absolutely miles away from where I want them to be. The difference for me is the foundations are looking a lot more solid than this time last year when after a pretty solid start the cracks were beginning to show and we were about to go on a disgusting run of form. In truth, the December win over Arsenal only prolonged the inevitable.
We'll progress this season, I've always maintained anywhere between in 8th-14th is where we'll end up. Never threatening Europe, never in any real danger of relagation.
That's definitely mediocre, but if you're in a hurry perhaps a project like Newcastle is more your thing.
I keep going back* to the “what if” of “WHAT IF, Carlo had this squad”
Ahhhh, that makes more sense.
The problem is, Carlo wouldn't have this squad. He'd never buy anybody with Onana or even Garner with one eye on the future. He'd spunk a load of cash on somebody like Rabiot and another 30 year old centre mid.
Lampard, Thelwell and the rest of the coaching team seem to be building something.
