2022/23 Frank Lampard

Im happy enough with a pragmatic style of play... but I feel he's too cautious which will lose him the fanbase over time (as what happened with Alladyce).

Moist got away with it as the top 4 aside we were the best of the rest and had regular European togger to keep the natives at bay.

This season Lampard will get a free pass but the following seasons to come he'll have to start winning either the bulk of his home games if he is to continue sitting back on the road or go for the jugular more in away matches against the "lesser" sides.

You look at Brighton putting 4 past Chelsea, Bournemouth/Newcastle putting 2 past Spurs and think if we were a little more brave could we have nicked something in these games ? Even the Utd game - we go 1 up but instead of piling on the pressure we just hand them the initiative.
I think what lost Allardyce the fan base, or more correctly, prevented him from ever having the fan base, was the stench of correction he brought with him and then fact that he took every opportunity too sneer at the fans and the club. He was an odious character who should never have been employed by the club. It was always going to be a short term thing. With the exception of Benitez, it was the most stupid appointment in my long years as a blue. The common denominator was that, they were both appointed by Moshiri.

We can't shop at that level of market expecially if we need 2 or 3.

We have to hope Lampard and the scouting team have found some gems. Our signings under Lampard gives me hope.
Yeah we have to rely on finding some real bargains and hope we kick on for the next couple of seasons.

However, if we want to get to that level where we’re pushing top 4 then we’ll need to make some big money signings. Sadly you get what you pay for in the PL.

Edit, unless Moshiri is writing the cheques!!

Totally different scenario's tbh.

We had Uncle Uz's cash, no FFP problems and an owner dreaming of the big time.

Do we have any of dat now ?
Yes they are totally different. But you linked the unlikely spending to our style of play being "Allardyce ball".

You didn't need to do that, you did it to make a point about our style and about Lampard (admittedly also pointing out our financial position).

The financial position, which Lampard has inherited, is the determining factor, not what style of football he plays..because the originator of that style was allowed to spend healthily on two players who have contributed to the position Lampard has inherited.

In our current situation I would imagine the owner acknowledges our limitations based on the playing style and is less likely to throw big money at 1-2 forwards compared to say if we were playing like Potterballs Brighton i.e controlling the possession in games and creating many chances but having a complete pop gun attack wasting chance after chance.

The former is midtable regardless of a forward being brought in the latter potentially could suprise a few and be dark horses for a european spot with a slotter signed.

But last season we didn't have Coady, Tarks, Patterson, Gana or Onana in the side (and Mykolenko was still new to the league).

People cant keep referencing last season when the bulk of the weak links in the side (Keane, Godfrey, Holgate, Gomes, Davies, Coleman) are not first choice players anymore.

We’ve lost arguably our best attacking player from last season though

Said in another thread:

Good season - >52pts
Reasonable - 47-52pts
Poor - 41-46pts
Unacceptable - <41pts

This is not asking for the world, but it does represent reasonably targets and stretch target for a club in our position, A good manager getting the most out the squad would do that.

At current rate we are on course for a poor season, bordering on unacceptable. I am therefore asking the questions that need to be asked.

I'm not being horrible mate, but to go from where we were to say 50 points would be a good season, in my view anyway.

If we finish 12th, that is not unacceptable. It's an improvement. I think we need to be realistic about our expectations.

52 points is way too high to say its a good season. That would be a 33% increase on last year. 45 points would be perfectly acceptable after the mess we got into last year.

We have one of the bottom 3 front lines in the league. No manager can work miracles with this level of quality.

You're right to have high expectations. But you're wrong to demand so much so soon. The standard we want to get to should be titles, and I'm serious about that, but that takes a lot of time and patience and we need realistic expectations in his first full season.

This really.

We dont achieve anything to keep sacking managers. It doesnt work.

Both styles were mid table.

Difference is that we've thrown very good money at achieving midtable.

The current situation is that we can't spend money because previous managers have massively wasted the money they were given.

Spending has nothing to do with our style - you know that.
