Without opening up a complete can of worms:

Benitez was parachuted in the middle of the summer and was given 1.5 mill to spend. It’s also now clear from our financial situation that we were never going to be able to keep James on those wages even if we’d wanted to. He also had to make do with utter clowns at the back like Keane Holgate Coleman and Kenny. Yes the results were terrible and the fracture with the fanbase didn’t help either, but I always had some understanding that the conditions he was working under were some of the worst in the premier league (a major problem being our deluded fanbase still think we should be about 6th if we just play the fight formation and have a go a bit more, amazing how 6 managers now haven’t cracked that)

Koeman on the other hand was given time to plan, a squad containing Lukaku Barkley Mirallas Stones and then a blank cheque from Moshiri to buy whoever he wanted. Somehow by the end of his tenure he’s not only sold Lukaku Stones Barkley but had lumbered us with Keane Schneiderlin Martina Klaasen Siggurdson Sandro Vlasic Rooney Bolasie all on big wages.

The team he handed over to Allardyce was one of the worst in the league with one of the worst defences and he saddled us with debt that is still killing the club to this day.

I know people dislike Benitez more but honestly when you put emotion aside the damage the two did just aren’t comparable. Koeman is the architect of the majority of the problems we find ourselves in now. It would be one thing wasting the opportunity we had under him (which he did) the opportunity loss from that alone (not getting into europe, player resale values etc.) is bad enough but he actually went even worse and nosedived us into financial oblivion.

Sold all the Crown Jewels, took all our money, left us with one of the worst squads in the league all on massive wages over long contracts we couldn’t get out of. He absolutely screwed he.
I read the first line and saw it was wrong, haven't read the rest. (But have seen someone write a very coherent and sensible rebuttal about benitez following your post). But in response to that first line.

Benitez was hired before our players even returned for pre season. Hardly middle of summer. He literally had a full preseason to work with a squad that finished 10th.

Gomes, Delph, James, Icelandic Babysitter, Tosun, Allan, Richarlison, Digne....

Only one on £100k a week is Mina.

So... we're still top 10 for wages?
We are still paying Gomes, but all those players were replaced, granted in most cases by "cheaper" players, I dont believe we have saved 140m a year in wages, was my main point.

As for top 10 still, I dont know, its very hard to get good figures on wages, unless we used last years accounts for everybody, so I have no idea if we are still top 10, I would probably say probably.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Tuchel, Poch or Simone would walk over hot coals to manage Everton with no money and a turbo gash squad wouldn’t they ?‍♂️ Dear me.

Mad take that.
Some people must think it’s still the 80s, that’s the only possible explanation.

Why on earth would managers used to winning leagues and european cups come to a skint club that can only dream of mid-table safety?

We’ve finished in the top half once in the last 4 years… Even that was a 10th place finish as well so hardly stellar.

Tarks was on a bosman, his wages will be decent.

Coady won't be cheap. Gueye will be on a fair whack. Onana i have no idea and the same with Garner.

Will be lucky if we get it down to 150 million.

Neither do I (I am wumming btw).

The reason why the Benitez "he only spent £1.5million" holds zero water for me is that he took over a side that finished 10th, missed out on Europe by 3 points, amassed the most amount of points since Koeman (I think), brought in 7 players. All he had to do was continue the foundations set by Ancellotti.

But he didn't. Just like he did when he took over from Ancellotti at Real he completely went about destroying what his predecessor did.

Changed a 433/442 to a 4231 and never changed. Amassed injuries...never changed. Conceded the most from set pieces (after barely under Ancellotti). Caused in-fighting. Blamed everyone but himself.

Benitez was utter poison. It's what he does.

Koeman wasn't poison. He just didn't care.

People underrate how good Ancelotti was. He had us winning games away from home with Iwobi behind Siggurdson and 4 CBs at the back. He actually made Michael Keane look competent, won at Anfield with half our team out and for a period had Doucoure and DCL looking like top players. He then goes and wins the league and CL with Madrid becoming the only manager to win 4. He can literally make a claim to being one of the best, if not the best, managers of all time.

Benitez was always going to be worse than him, and he was always going to reap the problems of Ancelotti’s spending. James was apparently on well over 100k and we couldn’t sustain that, he was always going to go, then Siggurdson was unavailable (not that I ever rated him), Bernard wanted out, then DCL gets crocked for the whole season.

His remit wasn’t to build on Ancelotti’s foundations, we’d massively overstretched under Carlo and it hadn’t worked out. His job was to slash the wage bill and keep us in the league. It’s the same job Lampard has now.
