When you have Gana as not only the deep midfielder but acting as a playmaker + coming back to pick up the ball from the defence...

...its going to be a low tempo.

Just having Onana there or Garner there instantly improves us.

For him to then just pass it straight back. lol lol

I think we are passing the ball aimlessly with no purpose. We dont play between the lines or create chances so whats the point of it?

We have far better chance bypassing our inept midfield and getting the opposition defence turned towards their own goal.

And by playing slow passive possession football, we are wide open on transitions when we lose it. And I mean wide open. Its frightening how easy it is to get to the edge of our box.

The style hes playing isn't working and will never work at Everton. It encourages lacklustre performance and a lack of intensity as well.
What’s annoying me is that’s one thing I genuinely thought he did ‘get’. I saw him give an interview a couple of months back where he talked about the fans wanting front foot, aggressive football, with hard working players trying to win every game. He was saying the fans don’t mind if it’s passing football or direct as long as they can see you’re doing it with a purpose. I thought ‘yes, finally a manager who gets it’, and the derby and palace game were the blueprint for that type of performance. We seem to have moved away from it though, and recent games have been as far away from that type of football as you can get.

Onana doesn't look any better on the ball than Gueye right now. Garner could potentially be that player but too early to tell.

I think Lampard worries we'd get overrun in midfield with Gueye, Iwobi and Garner being the trio. He's probably right.

We’ve gone from 433 with the emphasis on the wingers to be the creative spark that commit defenders; but they don’t because they’re not very good.

To an almost 4-1-4-1 with Onana and Iwobi being asked to support Maupay, but as we witnessed against Leicester and today; one quick move is breaking our press and the 5 up top are out of the game

If he has anything about him, we’ll revert to the 5 at the back, like last season, scrape points until reinforcements are bought

It's like I said before... surely by now he should see he can't rely on any of the forwards so would probably work out better sacrificing one of them for a another midfielder to at least win the ball and keep it.

Double down on not creating a thing to create some solidity. Never know, them arriving late in the box could get actual goals

Yep

I'm just confused and frustrated. It makes no sense and it has been horrific to watch

And on recruitment, if Thelwell thought Maupay and McNeil were what we need then we can draw 2 conclusions

1) He doesnt understand Everton and what our identity is
2) He's out of his depth
This! We don’t have tactics, it shows when gray or Gordon get the ball out wide our players storm the box. For our wingers to do some pointless skill and either lose the ball or turn back. Surely there’s a point when someone tells either the winger to put it in or for us not to storm the box. No clue of what to each other are going to do

It's why he should have a midfield 3 with Wobes as a 10. Get the fullbacks offering the width.

Let's have it straight...Maupes, McNeil, and Gordon offer zero. The only reason why Maupes plays is by default.

Needs to change it up McNeil Gordon gray are [Poor language removed] no matter what combination it is

I don't see how.

We scored 43 goals last season with Richarlison in the team, and he scored 10.

We've seen him go out and replaced it with lads who do not score or create

And, even with an unlimited budget, where are you finding a goalscorer mid season that will come in to a poor team that creates few chances and hit the ground running?

We need 3 signings in January to make up for what should have happened in the summer. That will really cost the club in a difficult window. Do we have that £££?

We've missed Patterson so much. Hopefully more balance in the team again now. Although didn't go that way today...

January just offers freshness and unpredictability. There's been plenty of attacking players who come in with a New lease of life and give a good couple of months, even loans.

I mean, we were all whinging about the idea of getting Lucas Moura in with Gordon going the other way to Spurs....I would bite all your limbs off for that now.
