Transfer Rumour Gabriel (Lille)

I havent a problem overpaying for a player providing they are worth it - Richarlison has proven his worth but at the time based on half a good season at Watford we did overpay for him but the gamble has paid off.

I havent a problem paying £25-30 million for Gabriel if he turns out to be a £50 million+ CB - thats how clubs progress.

The problem is when the likes of Brands and Walsh overpay for tosh like Iwobi and Siggurdsson.

this here Gabriel could be sold for £70 Million in 3 years and we will be sat here thinking why started to penny pinch.

If Ancelotti identified him as a priority, and according to reports, rated so highly as telling Napoli he was a potential replacement for Koulibaly when at Napoli - then I'd be disappointed.

Still, we can't fume at the club for overpaying and then fume when they try to get cheaper deals.
We do get ourselves into some pretty stupid situations though don’t we?

The problem captain is that they have tried to re-negotiate a deal after it came apparent football would be returning.

You’re spot on would be silly to have pushed through with it in March.
Tbh mate, that’s the first I’ve heard about us trying to re-negotiate a lesser price. I thought we put the brakes on the deal, and other clubs came in.
Which fair enough if we end up paying more in the long run or missing out on a top target to try and save a couple of mil, then yeah we’ve messed up.

Depends on how far our budget stretches and what they deem as priority positions though I suppose. I’m fairly happy with our cb’s for another year compared to our midfield, right wing and right back options.

Exactly - even if shock horror we went over FFP by £5 million come next accounts UEFA aint banning us over a few million.

When you factor in Richarlison will be out the door next summer and a good few players contracts expire like Walcott, Bolasie, Sandro, Besic on big wages for me its daft to he haggling over a few quid when FFP has been suspended until next year.

Not like Lille are demanding £40 million+

The way I read it, if we're to believe there was work done back in February, is:

We had a price that Lille were happy with, COVID hit, club weren't sure if PL would return/broadcasting cash, club lost a lot of money, they thought "hmm I don't know if we should be spending £25-30m on this player with so many financial unknowns", we either backed out or asked Lille to reduce asking price, they said no which is well within their rights, lots of other clubs decided they could spend £25-30m on him, now they've jumped ahead of us.

Two sides to that equation though. He could turn out to be another Iwobi/Siggy and we are stuck with a £30mill loss and a player who will be happy collecting his wages for 5 years.

You pay what he's worth, nothing more. If a deal can't be done then we move on.

We need to have a plan B, that should be the youth academy.

So many moving pieces on this and the Allan deal, we’re caught in quite the tango with Napoli.

Lille need to sell by a certain date due to FFP
Napoli need to sell Koulibaly in order to buy Gabriel
We want Gabriel and Allan from both clubs
Would Napoli sell Allan to us at the price we want if we snag Gabriel?

The only way I see this happening is if Allan moves first, then City delay on buying Koulibaly, putting pressure on Lille to sell ASAP, we swoop in and match Napoli’s “gentlemen agreement” offer, forcing Lille to either accept or take the gamble on the FFP timeline they have to adhere to

Still have my suspicions it was Moshiri or Silva who ended up pushing the Iwobi deal. So out of character for Brands.

He left PSV without proper left back because he thought their options were overpriced and they could do better waiting until the next transfer window. He didnt buy a centre half because he didnt think it was value.

Pretty much every story you hear about him is he is a shrewd operator and wont overpay... yet there we were buying a player on transfer deadline who´s position was left wing/number 10.. and both our options in those positions had hit double figures in goals the eason before. Makes no sense at all.

Anyone blaming Brands or the club for pulling the plug on this deal because of the pandemic is a complete moron. What if we’d have shelled out £25mil on him, or whatever it was, and the football didn’t even restart next season?
At the time, nobody had a clue what was going to happen within the coming weeks, months or even into the next year.

Spot on, the initial predictions where that footy wouldn’t be back until Christmas.

Deadline week and day do strange things to peoples sense of logic. Perhaps Iwobi wasn't Brands doing but he still approved it.

It would take a strong DOF to overrule a manager and a brave one to overrule the owner.

But still, that's the discipline and toughness we need here.

Brands has a wide remit but ultimately he is judged on transfers.

There isnt any evidence to back up the whole re-negotiating thing though, there's barely any to say we've bid again.
