For all you know the lad could be desperate to sign for us and judging by reports we've already agreed personal terms with him. So he obviously would like to come here.

I don't really get why he would choose napoli over us anyway tbh. We'll pay more wages, he'll get more exposure in the prem then in serie a, it'd be easier for him to settle at Everton with richarlison, Bernard, mina and that here. Also napoli finished 7th in a avarage league. You telling me Gabriel will be looking at gattuso and anchilotti and thinking gattuso is the manager to get me in the Brazil national team.

I know napoli are in the Europa league but I don't think that's a massive pull, champions league? Yeah if they had it but they don't and judging by the Italian league this season they won't be getting that for a good few years now.

I honestly just don't see why he would choose them over us. If a champions league team came in for him or even if the arsenal roumors were true then we obviously can't compete with them but 7th place napoli with gattuso at the helm and a lunatic owner, nah can't see it.

But you and a few others constantly push negative assertions that there is absolutely no way you can know are true, for example:

'We're doing nothing / Brands is sitting on his arse / we're settling for mediocrity'

None of these statements are backed up by any sort of fact, its all just speculation, do you really, honestly think Brands is not trying to do deals? That he just goes on holiday and plays golf and picks up his paycheck? Do you honestly believe that to be true?

Because there are tonnes of posts along those lines every day and its based on absolutely nothing apart from wet bedsheets

We all accept there is not a lot to be positive about at the minute, nobody is trying to suggest that it is all rosy. But the repetitive, unfounded, negative speculation put across as fact every day is just ridiculous and really tedious

Can agree with all of this. I'm sure brands is trying to get the players Carlo wants. But it pains me to say we are not a big draw. The likes of the RS, Real and Barca can easily sign players. We can offer big wages and the prospect of the new ground is a draw. But at the moment we are a mid team. Brands has done well to get digne, Kean, mina etc. Ok he's had a few duds like Delph etc. but the RS have had plenty of duds too. But for me he has done well. I would like to see us sign a couple of players from the lower leagues as often they have the hunger to get on i.e Cahill
Brands has still got a few weeks to improve the team and I'm hoping he does it. But competition for the better players is fierce. And we are fairly low down on those players list
 
Ok, let's look at this another way. Based on media reports, we are told that we were on the verge of signing Gabriel in February and March, after our transfer window has closed and we had just signed a new young centre back.

To believe any of the reports coming out of Italy, Napoli have been a front runner in competing with us the whole time. They also have a cap on foreign players which means they can't sign him until they sell 1 or 2 of their foreign stars. They have apparently, according to the latest reports, had a gentleman's agreement to sign him for some time, which assumes, it was when they had Ancelotti, who is now our manager.

Is it possible, that his knowledge of the deal was used as a bargaining chip to try and get a player he wants for us? We will compete in signing him until they agree to sell a player we actually want from them, which does several things. Stops them from asking for astronomical prices for the player/players we want so we back out and leave them to complete the signing unchallenged. Frees up the space of the foreign national quota in their squad and additionally gives them funds to complete the deal.

I have a hunch we sign a player from Napoli for around £20m, or equivalent cost to what they sign Gabriel for, in or around the time they sign Gabriel. If they do indeed sell Koulibaly to City after, they already have their planned replacement in place, which is simple business sense.

I believe the only reason we were linked with Gabriel is because we have Ancelotti's inside knowledge on the deal, and we wanted someone else without being held to ransome.
