Transfer Rumour Gabriel (Lille)

Why are we even arsed? How many people have actually seen him play? Up until our interest before covid hit I never even heard of him and I tend to watch a fair bit of foreign football. Yeah it feels like a kick in the nuts because it seems we was so close at one point but in all honesty I'm contempt with holgate, Keane, mina and Braithwaite as long as we improve the other areas needed.

Well up to Saturday I would have agreed. Not so sure now...

It's a weird one this. I'm not too fussed either way. But if we genuinely thought he was the long term answer at centre half, then 30m is hardly a big fee and I don't get why we would have pulled out. Especially if Ancelotti is a big fan.

Can only assume that either we weren't as interested as the earlier reports suggest. Or more likely, the player was never that interested in the first place.

1st choice signing going to Arsenal for;

€26mil fee
€4mil on bonuses

He was the one player i wanted so quite disappointed.

Still, at least Keane may get a new deal :)

Hopefully we sign someone equally as exciting this summer.

Methinks he wanted to live in London not Liverpool.

I just think we may have not wanted him for months myself and our name has just been used, but we will never know other than the press and co everytime a player signs for someone else, That the press and co will say player turned us down if we were after them or not.

Possibly.

Disappointing nontheless.

Theres usually a signing that gets me really excited...like Richarlison, Mina and Kean for the past 3 years.

Havent really heard any exciting names yet...Allan is a top player but not a long term player to watch develop and grow.

Also keen to see more Branthwaite/Nkounkou type signings.

I agree with this. I think we did pretty much have him locked in pre-Carlo (yes it was getting done in Feb) but by the time Jan/Feb hits Gbamin is out again, Gomes is just returning, Delph can't get on the pitch and we now have Covid and as a result finite resources. Gibson has committed and Branthwaite has been brought in, we now have five CBs. Carlo clearly identifies that midfield is our weak spot.

I think then and there, it was decided we pivot, and move our resources into the midfield which is in desperate need for a rebuild/renovation. The CB scenario is not perfect, but can wait.

I don't think it was a fee haggle, it was a decision to use the money in a different way, and I completely and utterly agree with the move to use it in midfield, if the above is indeed correct.

We matched the fee eventually mate.

Pulled out when it became clear Gabriel wanted Arsenal.

We renogatiated with Lille but did get the fee agreed - it was down to a restructuring of the deal (always likely to be the case) and prioritising up-front funds for elsewhere.

Plus side is that this should - in theory - mean the money is there for both Allan and Doucoure. Then it comes down to shifting other players off the wages.

It's relevant because Carlo specifically instructed Brands to go get him. Unfortunately, we failed and Carlo is beginning to understand the lack of pulling power Everton have while also disappointed in the effort his current players produce for him.

The rumour is he will walk, that's why we are arsed! 2nd, 3rd or 4th choice buys for Carlo will simply not cut it. He was promised much more.
