I put a link up this morning regarding Napoli signing Osihmen and him being non EU and that they would have to sell one to buy him.
And I’ve just read that in 2010 the Italian League changed the rules regarding non EU players and that Italian clubs can only Sign one EU player each season.
does anyone know how true this is, or has the rule changed. Because surely that would mean they couldn’t sign both osihmen & Gabriel. Though it does seem strange that journalists have tweeted that the double deal was nearly done, surely they would know the rule.
Well, last season they signed Lozano and Ospina.
Maybe Ospina has a Spanish passport?
The four Italian professional levels have different rules about non-EU signings: Lega Pro teams from both divisions may not buy any non-EU players. It does not matter if the club selling the non-EU player is Italian. In Serie B, teams can only buy non-EU players from Italian teams of all levels. Serie A has a detailed set of rules as follows:
If a Serie A club had
none or just
one non-EU player in the roster on the 30th of June 2013, the club is entitled to buy non-EU players from foreign clubs until the limit of
three is reached, without any restriction.
If a Serie A club has exactly
two non-EU players in the roster on the 30th of June 2013, the club is entitled to buy
one non-EU player from a foreign club without any restriction, until the limit of
three is reached. Furthermore, the club can buy
one additional non-EU player from a foreign club, provided that he replaces a non-EU player on at least one of these conditions:
- the replaced player is sold to a foreign club
- the replaced player’s contract expired on 30/06/2013
- the replaced player obtained European citizenship after the 1st of February 2013
If a Serie A club has
three or more non-EU players in the roster on the 30th of June 2013, the club is entitled to buy
two non-EU players from foreign clubs provided that
both of them replace a non-EU player each on at least one of these conditions:
- the replaced player is sold to a foreign club
- the replaced player’s contract expired on 30/06/2013 (this condition can apply to only one of the replaced players)
- the replaced player obtained European citizenship after the 1st of February 2013
Serie A teams can buy non-EU players within the Italian transfer market with no restriction. Non-EU players that have been signed during the summer window may not be sold until the following window.
All Serie A rules apply to full transfers only, not loans. If a player is loaned out, even to a foreign club, he still counts against the club’s non-EU count.
