You only find out a players strengths and weaknesses when they are playing against top class opposition.
I wonder how many of the French clubs would survive in the Premiership apart from PSG?
Last summer Ndombele and Pepe came to the Premiership from France, both player rated far higher than Gabriel and I think it fair to say they had very average seasons.
I have no doubt that in time one or both may turn out to have great careers in England when they get settled and understand the demands of the Premiership.

Gabriel is like that for me. A player that I would love to see us sign but I simply don't believe that he would immediately become our best centre half... it doesn't work that way usually.

The change in lifestyle, climate, pace of the game and demands of the club, are all factors as to why players succeed and fail.
There is no exact science as to who will be the right player for the club.

Knew nothing about this guy until we were linked, now think hes the next Vincent Kompany. As Im keen it means we wont sign him.

I do fear we have mised the boat with this one. Had his medical, all ready to sign and then the pandemic hit and I can't blame Everton for not wanting to committ to a £30m deal without knowing how the pandemic would affect things.

Hopefully we somehow get it over the line but feel as though the extra time will allow him to move elsewhere.

I know, I know, and I feel the same about it as you do regarding needing a midfielder and right mid more. But it’s just the constant media disrespect and disregard is honestly so grating. I think I posted along these lines earlier but I can see the club wanting to wrap this up before fully moving on to the bigger priorities. I want this done asap and am sick of being messed around by the agent

I'll maintain what I said earlier. Napoli were never properly interested... Still doubt there is anyone other than Everton really in for him, and the rest is just agents/Lille using them as negotiations are finalised.
