Yes Alicanti was the best variety - taste wise -what do you want to know about Lycopersicon
esculentum originating from South/Central America also are you growing it under glass - Polythene or outside?

Tried to upload a photo, but the file is too big...

No idea what variety I'm growing, but me and my 5 year old potted a few seeds from a tomato we ate a couple of weeks ago. I put them in decent compost. Lots of seedlings came up, so we thinned them out to leave one per pot. They've been growing well but the last couple of days the tips of some of the leaves have yellowed a bit. The seed leaves first, and now a few of the proper ones.

They're on a South facing windowsill, getting plenty of sun. My little girl is loving watching them grow so I want to keep them in tip top condition.

Any ideas?

Tomato feed. Plus it could be over watering or not enough water or a disease

What compost did you pot them up in to ? Multipurpose with a picnic of bonemeal fertilizer is ideal - sounds like slight overwatering so far, also sowing seeds you saved is not ideal - it's not to late to order the Alicante variety I previously mentioned and sow them again 12 seeds in a small pot and prick 8 out into a nice compost as the seed you have sown is like a bit and miss for good fruit of a decent end tomato...

Also now that the weather has gone colder move them of your window sill at nightime, into the warm ......then place them back on the windowsill the next day etc ease up on the watering if you are happy growing them as a mixed unknown variety that's an exciting for your kids etc ;)

Thanks for the replies

I bought John Innes (think that's the name) potting compost... We've planted quite a few things as a nice lockdown hobby for us both

As you and @tim gabbott suggest, could be over watering... I'll ease off for a couple of days.

Re fertiliser, I've got some blood fish and bone in the shed. Shall I put some of that in the soil when they eventually go in the garden?

Yes when planting in a sheltered sunny place ;)

Nice one...

One last question if you don't mind, do I sprinkle it on the top of the soil, or mix it in?
Be careful u don’t use to much as it can cause problems,,, google it and it will give u guidance...
Nothing better home grown tomato sandwich with salt pepper and salad cream. Enjoy

Hi Joey.
I have 2 gardens one east facing and one west. Both with grass lawns. The Soil is fairly sandy due to the proximity to the coast. My question is this: are you able to send me nudey pics of you preening your tomatoes please? You can be wearing gloves if necessary and maybe an apron of some sort.
thanks in advance.

@Joey66

I have an Acer (not sure what type) that I planted in the garden last year. It weathered the winter and some leaves started to develop last month - but they’ve since wilted. The plant itself is looking in a bad way, it’s about a foot tall, is there anything I can do to help it - I was thinking of digging it up and repotting.

Any advice greatly appreciated

Inspect the roots it may have the deadly pest vine weevil grub that eats the roots they are the size of a small prawn if they are present squeeze them dead get a good root ball prune the acer by a third and repot the plant .....
I am guessing that is the problem .......or it has root rot if you have overwatered it if so same treatment.....
Look at the leaves if the ends have a chunk out of them the adult vine weevil has hosted on your acer it's larvae will eat the roots look for 3-6 or more larvae prawn coloured grubs they munch through roots causing the wilt, and if left will kill your Acer .....

In my greenhouse days that pest could see crops off - they used to only eat primulacace family plants - now the rotters are partial to eat most plants not fussy - the aldult is built like an armoured tank we used to set grease traps out in the glass house to catch them a big Beetle - if you found one on the glasshouse bench they played dead as soon as you put your finger by them - remove your finger , and they would scurry away they only ate a bit of the corner of a plant leaf ...

They could reproduce with out sex laying the eggs at the base of a plant then the gross would just simply eat the roots chemicals worked but were dangerous to yourself ......they got bannned Aldrin .....then they found a predictors that ypu watered in to every crop in your nursery which injected hitself into the grub larvae - bingo it worked....

The adult was and is still bullet proof - only my size tens managed to crunch it ...... lol
the most lethal garden pest under glass, and on outside plant ornamentals like Acers - Begonias - most perennials ....
