We have an ancient apple tree in our garden, remnants from a Georgian orchard and its has developed a strange green mold looking covering over the trunk and wider branches. It produces wonderful cooking apples and I would be gutted if it went so I am wondering if I can somehow create another.

What is a rootstock mate?

I remember reading that there`s a group of Naturalists who are trying to catalogue as many ancient orchards as they can mate.

I`ll have a look and see if I can find their details for you, as I think they`d be very keen to add yours to the list.

The purpose is to get preservation orders on them and stop them disappearing forever - developers etc.

Thank you for my rep today.

I have heard of that - it could be like looking for a needle in a haystack, to get the exact match - or he could take a photo and write to Kew Gardens ....
