@Eggs s plus anyone else taking softwood cuttings the conditions to root them in is humidity in slight shade - The milky pedal bin plastic bin liners do a marvellous job put your cuttings down the side of a 9 cm pot in multi -purpose compost put a 7-9 p inch cane in the middle of the pot, and place the bag over the pot resting on the cane is slight shade- then inspecting daily and spraying the cuttings leaves with a spray gun those 99p ones no rooting powder necessary ....
You will soon know when the plant is in growth inspect by tapping out of the pot only 2-4 weeks depending on the plant
;)

Another good tip in windy weather is to simply put your hanging baskets or wall baskets at floor level till the winds subside .,..
Plus maintenance is water most days and feed with a balanced feed one week and a high potash (tomato) feed the week after do this weekly....
Also before feeding water each basket before feeding , because it's pointless feeding any dry plant as the feed nutrients just was through the root system before it can benefit from each feed ....
Pick one day every week to choose to feed ..
Your basket should flower on till mid October.....if you carry out this practice...'

If you have grown Webs wonderful or any other varieties of Cos lettuce - ideal not to harvest the whole lettuce - what I do is cut the outer leaves on various lettuce then you can keep cutting the outer leaves for your salad, wraps or sandwiches - lovely when freshly picked... only do this when the lettuce gets to a good size .......

Gardeners World last night - his watering tips were so wrong in drought conditions which we have had - water your plants daily - so when it rains the rain will stick to the soil - also feeding water first then feed afterwards on the same day so you are not wasting plant feed - also balance, miracle grow one-week High tomato feed the next week - Ballance your soluble feeds out - as potassium will help the flowers, but also send them to seed far quicker......
watering first before feeding the hanging basket or soil etc.....same principle.....

Pond pumps fgs why do they deliberately put a 20 meter lead on them knowing they cash in on buying a waterproof conector to your house plug .......extra cable & junction box I used Swell uk got a good voltage pump all day to do it nearly because of the join in the cable .......
I had the last pump for 18 years ...... don't make um like that anymore .......

What compost did you pot them up in to ? Multipurpose with a picnic of bonemeal fertilizer is ideal - sounds like slight overwatering so far, also sowing seeds you saved is not ideal - it's not to late to order the Alicante variety I previously mentioned and sow them again 12 seeds in a small pot and prick 8 out into a nice compost as the seed you have sown is like a bit and miss for good fruit of a decent end tomato...

Also now that the weather has gone colder move them of your window sill at nightime, into the warm ......then place them back on the windowsill the next day etc ease up on the watering if you are happy growing them as a mixed unknown variety that's an exciting for your kids etc ;)

Followed your advice... Thanks. With less watering they've thrived. They've been out in the garden for a while now and I've been feeding them lots. They're now about 3ft tall! We have flowers appearing this past week so hopefully we'll have some tomatoes to eat soon!
