Think he has been far better in recent weeks, especially Saturday

Is it no coincidence that it has come as the same time as us not playing Thursday Sunday & him playing every minute & also he had a nice 2 week break thanks to his suspension.

Makes me think Martinez has not managed him properly this season, he needs resting every now and then and saving for certain games. For a 34 year old to play over 40 games (and pretty much every minute of them) is abit to much in a position were you need energy

Hopefully when Cleverley arrives for the next season, he will play much lower portion of games for us. Still good player.

When not playing 90 mins in every match he's available for, yes. He's been poor this season and knows it himself which he won't be happy with - likewise for most of the team though.

He did very well again at the weekend. Not quite MOTM but he was more like his old self.

I'll say this for him, he's not injury prone.

Disappointing this season.

Possibly in the top 5 worst of our players this season.

It's a worry as he's got 2 years to go. Essentially the points in here are right, play him a bit less and he'll be fine.

Our change of system has seemed to have helped him the last few games though.

Changing to a 4-1-4-1 from a 4-2-3-1 with him as the sole defensive midfielder has helped him no end. But as you say, he's been massively disappointing.

I definitely agree he's been over-used and it's contributed to his alarming decline. He should only be playing 25-30 games all season, starting maybe about 20. How many games has he started this season, nearly 40?! He still has his uses but only if properly and carefully utilised, not just started for the sake of it. Martinez's tactics and man-management this season have been absolutely appalling.

He's been poor, no doubt, and being played too regularly certainly must've played a part. I also think he's struggled along with the team as a whole, though - the absence of movement ahead of him is the biggest reason he's dithered so much in possession and been generally poor in distribution this season. An upturn in our form has immediately corresponded to an upturn in his, and willing runners like Lennon and a revitalised Lukaku have helped.

Neville awarded McCarthy the man of the match prize and had plenty of praise for the 24-year-old and his midfield partner, Gareth Barry. "They’ve been the outstanding two on the pitch for me," he said. "The way in which Stones and Phil Jagielka have been protected by Barry and McCarthy, they’ll feel like they’ve had a very comfortable afternoon. They won’t feel like they’ve been put under any pressure. As much possession as United have had in front of them, they haven’t tested the goalkeeper or defenders in any real way. "I’ll give McCarthy the man of the match. All through the game he’s been non-stop, protecting his back four, breaking up play."

It was a view echoed by defender Stones in his post-match interview with Sky Sports and the stats back up the impact both McCarthy and Barry had on the game.

The two covered more ground than any other Everton player (Barry 11.44km, McCarthy 10.74km), while Barry won more duels (seven) than any midfielder on the pitch and McCarthy regained possession for his team on more occasions (seven) than any Everton outfield player.

The pair only gave away three fouls between them all game, while Barry made more tackles than anyone on the pitch (five), made more clearances than any other midfielder (five) and lost the ball fewer times than any outfield player to complete 90 minutes (seven).
