Gareth Barry

Was superb.
I like Besic, but yesterday was the best of Gareth Barry, so Besic has a long long way to go before he's able to displace and replicate the kind of job Gareth Barry does.

It's no surprise that his upturn in form has coincided with the return of Jimmy Mac. He also seems to be thriving with McCarthy playing what seems to be a bit further forwards.

Generally I think the team's confidence is also a big factor. When we're up against it and making loads of mistakes, he comes under the spotlight a bit more and just doesn't have the legs to cover other people. When he gets to play his game he is great, though.

The worry is that when he was awful for a long, long time he remained in the team. You could argue that persistence is paying off but I think if he'd have been rested he'd be playing at least as well as he is now. It's not a matter of him suddenly pushing through a bad bit of form, I think it's a matter of who is playing around him and how they're playing.

Disappointing this season.

Possibly in the top 5 worst of our players this season.

It's a worry as he's got 2 years to go. Essentially the points in here are right, play him a bit less and he'll be fine.

I don't think it is, I'm sure an MLS team would be willing to pay a nominal fee for him in January/next summer if it doesn't work out for him here next season.

Played well, although wasn't it Barry that Fellaini mugged off and missed a sitter, on a different day that could've been catastrophic.

Horses for courses. for me Besic McCarthy is the future. but Besic still adapting and Barry is a good stop gap.

That said he shouldn't be starting every game and should only be used against a team that doesn't have pacey cms

I think that Barkley will be switched to a deeper position next season. We already have McCarthy, Besic, Gibson and now Cleverley for those positions, so we're starting to look a bit overloaded.

The intention seems to have been to use Barry more sparingly last year but injuries to McCarthy and Gibson meant that we weren't able to. I'm sure it will be the case next season though. It was evident from the number of times that he was caught on the ball that he's slowing down.

We're used him as an emergency centre back already and we need cover on the left side of defence, so it's just occurred to me that maybe he'll be our third choice centre back next season? Left-footers are hard to come by and we want somebody who will be happy to deputise for Stones and Jags. It would mean that we could concentrate our budget on midfielders and forwards too.
