Attacking players, almost every single one of them.

Decided I need to go through the list for real data... I haven't watched all these guys so I'm not sure where all the MFs play, but here is what I can tell:

Forwards: Anangono, Torres, Higuain, Torres, Castillo, Defoe, Keane, Di Vaio, Bengtson, Cahill, Henry, Martins, Wondolowski (US), Beiler, Koevermans (gone), Miller

Attacking Mids: Diaz, Ferreira, De Rosario, Lopez, Dempsey (US), Donovan (US)

Other Mids (not sure where to class these): Minda, Bonek Garcia, Bernardello, Bradley (US), Kleberson (gone), Valeri, Morales, Rosales

Defensive Mids: Rios, Chara, Laba

Defenders: Gonzalez (US)

Seen as most European well known players will only consider it once they reach 30 plus years and see it as a great well paid semi retired role the MLS teams tend to go after South American talent now younger players.

This is the new trend. Clubs are thinking longer term now. While signing 30+ year old European veterans still happens (Defoe!), if you go through and look at the Designated Player list there are a LOT of South American youngsters.

I have a feeling that Baines will take up Barry's position in a Philipp Lahm role and Oviedo will get a few games at left back?

Here's the issue with a defensive-minded non-American such as Barry and MLS:

1. To prevent overspending in a new league where many clubs aren't profitable yet, there's a per player salary cap of USD $387,500 per year (so what, 4,500 GBP a week?)

2. The exception to this rule, the Designated Player Rule (AKA the Beckham Rule) allows up to three players per club to be paid more than that amount.

3. Because there's such a limited number of paydays available, a designated player signing must not just only be a great player, but also a great marketable player. Unfortunately, to casual fans goals are sexier than snide tackles.

Therefore, virtually all DP's are goalscorers (Defoe, Henry, Keane, Cahill, etc.). The only more defensive players that pick up DP slots are normally USMNT regulars who can bring the reputation of having a Yank international in your lineup (Omar Gonzalez, Maurice Edu).

So, even though Barry would be an upgrade on pretty much every midfielder in the entire league minus maybe one (Bradley), I find it unlikely that any club would be willing to pay what he would want.

Cracking post mate, that clarifies the matter hugely for me now, guess it'd only be the City team when it is up and running that would be a possibility then, can actually see them using that as a way to funnel their retirees to for one last pay-day whilst helping to push the brand of City in the USA

That's about the only way I'd see him coming to MLS, via NYCFC. He'd provide some continuity between the two clubs.

Citeh re-signs him, then transfers him to NYC in winter to captain the new side in its inaugural season? Sounds like a plan.

(But I'd really like for him to come back to us for a couple more years :D)

I'd be happy with making an agreement for one year with him going to the USA after that mate, gives us another year of him starting, gives us a chance to see if Gibson can come back, and gives the young lads coming through another year of learning off him and being allowed to develop, by that time we hopefully are in a period of stability elsewhere (striker etc) so it's a good stop gap

Also stops us being potentially lumbered with paying a high wage if he suddenly hits the wall (which i doubt will happen anyway but can never be sure)

My gut feeling is that he's staying with us. I think if he was going elsewhere, even though he can't announce it before his City contract expired, he would've said his goodbyes to us when the season ended. Thanked us for being the best fans he's ever had the honour of playing in front of etc.

Hope you're right, but the longer this drags on without definite word, the more likely it begins to get that he's looking into other options.

He's contracted till 1st June, as far as I know he's not allowed to announce a move to an English club till after this date.

Citeh and himself could cancel his contract by mutual consent any time they wanted. I doubt that's really an issue.

But then he wouldn't get paid for the weeks until June.

If I was him I'd be putting off moving until after his contract has expired, especially if the reported 80ish K a week is accurate.

Right and that's what i was saying the euro players are over 30 generally and the teams seem to know that's the only way they will get them but if they target younger central and south American's they might stand a better chance that and these players tend to bring some extra flair with them which the MLS fan base seem to really enjoy and well works in the MLS it suits the style.

I agree Barry maybe too defensive minded and he is not the typical target or marquee player for an MLS team but that's not to say he couldn't or might not be.

It seems to me also that maybe players like he and other defensive types may not want to play in the MLS either it only seems to be a type of player that wants to give it a go.
