Gareth Barry

I really hope he signs a two year deal with us. It's important to have a few old pro's with good attitudes and Gareth is one of those.
Especially in the high pressure games - noticed a couple of times him making a "calm down" sort of guesture to both Barkley & mcCarthy, particularly in the early part of the seaon. They were losing their heads a little just trying to chase the game and an old pro is useful on the pitch so emotions don't get the better of skill & shape. Barry just got the ball and deliberately slowed the game down so we kept possesion and build up the attack in a more methodical way.

gareth barry is invaluable to our team at the moment, i never would of thought i’d be sayin this about him a few years back. but for the transitioning of our team at the moment he is one of, if not the most important player on the pitch and i really really do hope we sign him. it might only b 2 seasons but these r the most important couple of seasons 4 how we move on and take the nxt step forward! players like mcarthy could learn so much from him to add to his already great game & 4 the youngsrers like barkley and stones he seems to have such a calming influence on the game that it can only b a good thing! so come on bobby, have a word!

It's why I had him as my player of the season. It's not just what he does but also his influence on those around him. I would be made up if we signed him on a permanent

He's a must for us I reckon, especially on a free.
There are rumours that, as part of a clause put in the original loan agreement, we'll have to pay Man city back the share of the salary they paid him this past season ~ 2.5 million.

But even at that price he is far better and cheaper than most other transfer options. We also know he fits in well with the team, both on and off the pitch, so apart from his legs going he is very low risk and he never had what you call pace to begin with.

I've heard this to but how is it possible when his contact runs out? Surely we should not have to pay 2.5mil for a player who is no longer owned by any club.

From what I read on the bluemoon forum everton & city had a lot of discussion when the original loan went through as to who was going to pick up how much of Barry's wage. The eventual agreement was that they would split it but that if Everton signed him we had to backpay the part of his wages they had covered.

Obviously how a) true this is b) how legally enforceable it would be, I have no idea. But it is an arrangement that could of suited both clubs in that we would save money up front and get a low cost trial of a player whilst City got some wages off the books with the potential of a refund of the rest if things worked out.

If it was written in the original contract I would imagine we would honour it so as to not mess up any future deals between the two clubs.

That couldn't be legally done. His contract will run down in a few weeks. He can sign a contract after that anywhere without any particular fees whatsoever for a club.

I don't believe this story about the 2.5M anyway. City wanted Barry out for one. They also pay players far too much and are fully aware they won't get full wages on loan deals as has proved to be the case on several players they have loaned out.

Maybe 2.5M was in there if we wanted to complete in Jan but no chance once his deal expires they can have any right for money. It just doesn't work like that and certainly I highly doubt it would be enforceable.

It's hard to envision him going to another Premiership side. He'll sign with us or go off to MLS I reckon. This bit about him signing with Arsenal or Spurs is a load of tosh.

@Dozbik @Christiffa25 as I said i'm not sure how true or legal the 2.5m issue is.

However, if you'd asked me to guess that a footballer would threaten to leave a club because they didn't make enough of a fuss on his birthday and, even more importantly, be happy for their agent to make that the public reason I'd not have believed that either.

But if the clause is in there I think we would pay it as it would be stupidly shortsighted not to given City and Chelsea are the two clubs we are most likely to get domestic loans from. They both have good acadamies but little space to blood them given their highly paid foreign stars and that influx of talent means there are decent players who they want to get off their books quickly.

Anyhow, my original point was more that even if he cost us that amount he'd still be worth signing.

Didn't Martinez say he would have some news about this in the last week of the season to tell us in the first week after the season had finished yet it's almost 2 weeks now and nadder would be a great first signing of the window IMO
