@ilikecheese @Dithering Dougie

The thing is, we have seen Distin getting what is essentially a rolling one year deal which I agree with. Then howard gets a 3 year contract taking him to 39 years of age on top whack which is insane.

If Barry gets a 3 year deal it looks to be Kevin Campbell syndrome all over again. The only way this seems plausible is due to ledson stepping up and taking over with barry a frew transfer, wages only stopgap.

Yeah I agree to a point, like I said earlier we should be past this sort of thing. But Barry will be getting offered deals with more long term security elsewhere and because he's essential to our new system of playing Martinez must feel him worthy of this sort of offer. Again hopefully the 3rd year is an optional clause that the club can activate if he's still up to scratch after 2 years, it certainly makes more sense than a straight up 3 year deal.

The reason we can offer Distin a 1 year rolling extension is because he's become part of the furniture since he moved here. But initially I'm sure he got a 3 year deal at the age of 30 and he's still performing well every season, with no signs of his form or fitness dropping yet. Although he won't last forever the length of contract makes him pretty risk free, if he's showing signs of dropping off and coming to a natural end he won't be offered an extension next season. Howard's deal is slightly different as we know goalkeepers can easily perform at the top level well into their late 30's, and also it's likely that if he started to fade he could easily get a contract elsewhere in the MLS given his career and reputation.

Barry is very similar to Lampard as in how they look after themselves and training etc. Lampard is now 36 and still has 16 clubs sniffing around him. If we offer Barry a three year contract he will only be at the age Lampard is now.

I'll happily take Barry as he is not a player that relies on pace etc, its more his reading of the game which should still be top notch for the next few seasons. Taking out the playing side also, i would say its essential we have people like this round the club also. You cannot put a price on his experience and setting an example to the likes of Ledson etc will set them up nicely for their future career.

Get the deal done Bobby!

In much more detail, you explained what my thoughts are on this.

Barry, was arguably our POY...or not far off from it last season. I see no reason to question why we'd want to lock him up, even if it meant some trepidation over the length of the deal. NEA about the 3 years...would prefer the 2 + 1 option you're suggesting. At the end of the day, a multi year deal of some sort had to be offered. If I were in his shoes, and Everton were offering a potential 1 year rolling deal and someone else were offering a 3 year deal, the decision would be too obvious. His signing is important...we've been ringing this alarm bell for months. If the story is indeed right, let's just be happy the biz is done, and we can move on to other pieces of biz.

Note that we got a 40% discount on his wages if this story is true.

To be honest I wouldn't be keen on us offering him a 3 year deal. Surely we've moved on from the days of having a 36 year old player as one of our top earners? It would seem a bit desperate and doesn't really indicate long term planning in my mind. But obviously it needs sorting and Barry holds all the aces on this hand.

Having read the article this part tells me it's bollocks;

according to The Sun,

Great move if true, how much would we pay just to replace him with a like for like? Look how much McCarthy was. Good holding midfielders are a premium. This deal is virtually risk free. He will be vital if we want a squad to perform in all competitions. Plus he's not scared to win, the more players who dont bottle it we can get in the squad the better.

The risk would be that his performance declines over the next year and then we'd have one if our top earners sitting on the bench for a couple of years.

Other teams don't seem to be banging on Distin's door though. I think this situation is quite different. I'll go to an old standard...you have to pay a premium for an English player.

Howard new contract 3 years. Yes, hes not 'English' but no one banging on our door for him either.

Point well taken IF its 2 years with an option for a third. I think thats ok business...1year great business but 3 years would be madness.

I suppose signing on fee wouldnt be cheap either.

The longer he is here, the more Ledson can learn off him. If the 3yr deal is true, once that is up, Ledson will be at the age and hopefully experience to just step right in fully and form his own partnership with McCarthy.
