I still don't get why we would pay man city anything for him?!

Because as long as a) it's legal and b) everyone agrees, you can enter into contracts stipulating pretty much anything.

Everton and City presumably signed a contract with a clause saying "if we take him on loan and buy him after, we'll pay you £2.5M".

If Barry went on to sign for us and we didn't pay them, they'd sue us/him for breaching that contract (as opposed to Barry's expired City contract) and they'd win. It's not a restriction of trade (as per the Bosman ruling which allows frees at all) because if Barry wanted to sign for us for nothing, he was quite welcome to wait it out on City's bench for six months.

All in all, a good deal for everyone involved. They get him off their books, he gets six months more football, and we get to try before we buy.

So he'd be free to anyone else but £2.5m to us?! Feels like we'd be getting ripped off.

If it was in the terms of his season long loan deal that we signed and agreed to last summer on deadline day, we really have no complaints.

£2.5m isn't that bad.

2.5m for Barry is great value, even at 33.

Definitely one of the better Last Big Move deals we've done. Cringe to remember the likes of Ginola and Hughes treating us as a retirement home. Thought it was ace at the time like, being young and never having seen Everton sign a "big name" before.

33 1/2 when the season kicks off. If he's on high wages and it's a 3 year deal then I'm not sure that would be great value to be honest

He's never had any problems with injuries and played most of last season for us.

Frank Lampard lasted at Chelsea until he was 36.

The role that Barry does for us will enable him to play for a few years yet. It's a very good move, for all concerned.

Is it tho, MLS will still want him. Sell him with one year left, free money, great play.

Yes, it's daft.

The MLS want him now, i doubt they'll want him when he's 36 and even i they did they'd just wait until he was a free transfer. Nobody's going to pay decent money for a 35 year old.

While teams like United or Arsenal are giving one year deals to players over 30, we're handing a 3 year deal to a 34 year old who was blowing out his arse at the end of last season.

Similar to the Howard deal, it's too much. If it's true.
