Gareth Barry

Tbf on Barry think he was carrying an injury in that game. But speed has never been his strong suit anyway so has had to rely on good positional sense and hope the CBs behind him can fill in if needed for pace, unfortunately John Terry's legs had totally gone by that game.

Wouldn't have taken Barry to Brazil either, he looked far too tired at the end of a long season to have coped with the heat/humidity and frequent games.

England are really short of options for true defensive midfielders in general, most of the ones we have are either old or slow or both.

Or Jack Wilshire

What, John Terry's legs had gone..............the same John Terry who 4 years later should have been playing in Brazil instead of Jagielka and taken us on to WC glory.....

Barry is too slow I think to play there alone. Needs a mccarthy type alongside him to do the running.

Invaluable to have by all accounts to help the bunchnof young centre midfielders coming through.

I hope he wears a nice set of clogs this year. Someone needs to tell him that black boots are badly out of fashion!

I'm hearing from a laughing Red that we paid 2mil' for him. Why would you pay a transfer fee for a 33 year old player out of contract?

Someone said here that it's part of the loan deal, but that was last season.

What actually, was the deal?

A mate in work who is a Leicester fan was so excited when they were rumoured to be in for him, considered him the signing that would have almost guaranteed they'd stayed up, he's gutted we got him. I agree with these sentiments. I also think it's very telling Martinez talked about Barry's dressing room influence. He's a premiership title winner, he worked under a variety of coaches and talks about his love for the way Bobby wants to play.

Even if we have had to fork out £2m for him, compare that with what we're getting (out of contract or not), it offers better value than a lot of other deals going on in this window.

Nobody is quite sure tbh. Just tell him that they would have won the league last season with an actual defensive midfielder rather than having a show pony who bottles the big games and sprays pointless 50 yard passes around.

I must admit, I'm still a bit unsure about Gareth Barry. Yes he is a boss player, he proved that last season, that block against Eto'o is a standout moment for me still.

My problem is this: I can never trust a man who has 2 first names as a full name.

David Cameron, Elton John, Matt Damon, I could go on.

I know I need to look past this, I will try, for you GB.

Trevor Steven, Colin Harvey, Bruce Wayne?

Point refuted sir.
