Gay footballers about to come out

Exactly this, it shouldn't even be worthy of a thread on a football forum really yet alone national news papers but I understand were not at that point yet and there needs to be pioneers so to speak that get us to that point but if it was me I would rather not bring myself into the limelight.
Erm.

If they do come out it'll be quite a brave thing to do. Hugely brave in fact to invite the endless scrutiny and also vile from supporters stuck in old bigoted mindsets.
I probably wouldn't if I was in their position.

Lots of people saying they don't care, have no interest the truth is everybody posting or reading here are curious as to who it is and many will be hoping it's one of the RS,didn't one of the papers run the same headline last year as well?

It shouldn't even be an issue though should it? Sad thing is, someone HAS to do it, in order for this whole discussion to die.
First Black Footballer.... someone done it, and low and behold, there are several players who are black, obviously it's different in the fact that being gay isn't visible like skin tone, but, the only way it's going to be accepted is if it does happen.

As for the UK, I believe we've got an extremely lenient, and very liberal view in life, what ever the reason, that Gender, Race and Homosexuality are not an issue for 99.99999999999999999999999% of the population, only, the news will glorify the bastards who stand up and protest (e.g. EDL) and suddenly 1,000 seems like a lot, when in reality, it isn't.

It's Private life for a reason.

There was a tweet last year that got quickly deleted, i believe from a guy from one of those ridiculous reality shows insinuating that one of them was. The fact I can't find trace of it anywhere online tells me all I need to know

If it is one of them, can you imagine the fuss? If it was one of us he'd get support but it'd just be one of those things we quickly forget about. If it's one of them there'll be pink scarves or something equally as ridiculous

Lots of points I want to make on this but not sure how to articulate them

There's no doubt that whoever does come out will be on the receiving end of chants from rival fans. It won't be the whole ground by any stretch but enough to make it heard.

Songs like the above are deriving humour from an undercurrent that being gay is a bad thing.

The counter argument will be that it's akin to the mancs' singing "you scouse [Poor language removed]" to Ross Barkley, yet a lot/most of them will have scouse friends and don't mean it outside of the tribal nature of football. Maybe no one should ever take the piss out of anyone for anything ever again just to be on the safe side. You don't choose to be born in Liverpool and will have to deal with the "watch your wallet" comments so why shouldn't a gay person have to deal with jokes?

I guess it comes down to the fact that when it is about a protected characteristic (ignoring the illegality of the matter) the comments they receive are far more likely to be in an abusive rather than jokey form . Even if there were no abusive or even jokey comments/chants the media fuss would be ridiculous for the first one or two to come out so I can understand why they wouldn't. Would be better for a load of them from different clubs to all come out at the same time, diffuse the media attention and fans wouldn't be as quick to use it as a stick to beat them with if they had gay players of their own.

Having said all that I fully believe that, while there will be songs and comments from some, there will be a rallying behind those who do come out by the large majority and I hope the media allows that part of the story some air time.
