Gay footballers about to come out

Yeah thats surely the main worry, the abuse they may get.

I'd like to think that the vast majority of football fans (and people in general) are not homophobic, so therefor it's easy to say it won't be an issue except to a small minority of neanderthal idiots.

Problem is, with the tribalistic nature of football and almost peer pressure when they see others doing it that casual homophobic banter (for want of a better term) would be quite widespread.

Hopefully you know what i mean. It wouldn't be full on hatred of a player for being gay, more piss taking and wind ups to a player of a rival team using the easy target of their homosexuality.

Pretty much bound to happen. I think the novelty would soon wear off though.

I played football with a lad he had a girlfriend and a little girl, for all intents and purposes he was straight.

One evening after playing a game he got a few of us together, and basically said he was gay.
You could of heard a pin drop, then one of the lads said 'sound, you can get the ale in'
It never changed anything but you could see for him it was a difficult decision in telling us, to do this as a Prem player knowing you could be open to abuse from one end of the country to the other....must be something something you will not do until you retire or the media let it into the open domain..

Bore off, sixth-former.

If they don't like being called 'gay' then WT effing F are they describing themselves as?

I guess you'd prefer I used the term 'queens' or 'pooftas' or 'shirt-lifters' or 'arse bandits' in order to take offence - at least you'd have a reason then? Might at least validate your poxy, pathetic argument.

Well I won't give you the satisfaction. I'll refer to them as 'gays' or indeed 'the gays' because that's how they refer to themselves. That's the term they coined for themselves - Alright?

And who said they weren't discriminated against? Because you won't find me saying it anywhere on this or any other thread. What I said was they're not discriminated against anywhere's near like the unemployed are. There's no hate campaign against them from the MSM as there is for the unemployed.....positively encouraged by a load of gay MP's too!!

Elton john - never done a day's graft in his life - revered.

Tom Daly - same

Steven Fry - same

John (LOOK AT ME EVERYONE, I'M GAY) Barrowman - can't tell us enough how gay he is - revered.

So don't give me your total bollox about how they're not revered. Every one of them making a noise about how they're gay. Well that's all very nice, I'm sure - but I'm sick of hearing it.

ha ha! Amazing. It's not a problem about using the word 'gay' it's about using the phrase 'the gays'. It's then about using an unrelated argument to cause issue with it. No one is suggesting that because gay people are discriminated against another section of society isn't. In fact, it would be appropriate to suggest this is part of a divide and conquer situation. It is not gay people v working class people yet you've decided it is. Just because some people are okay with being known as gay doesn't mean everyone is.

Is John Barrowman any more revered than another actor in a similar position? Are any of them revered for their sexuality? You mentioned one of the biggest pop stars of all time, a very successful British athlete and a very popular actor, comedian, writer and TV host - but you think they're revered for their sexuality rather than their talent?

And along comes the other one....ho-hum.

Being gay I have no problem with. Being told by someone that they're gay, or when that person's referred to as gay, or their homosexuality is the main part of their background, on a repetitive basis, is highly annoying.

I get it. They're gay. So what? I don't want or need reminding of it every 10 seconds ffs. 'kinell - what's people's problem?

If I try not to take any notice (More or less impossible because the matter is omnipresent) I'm perceived as bigoted. If I complain about the reptitiveness & ubiquity, I'm bigoted. If I say they overreact to their own paranoia - I'm bigoted. If I refer to them as gay, I'm bigoted. If I question the 'bravery' of people coming out - Yep, you guessed it - I'm bigoted.

Why does it matter to you? Why question it at all? Why are you so blinkered that you get so angry about the idea it might be difficult to come out as gay? Even if it wasn't difficult, and someone thought it was, why not let them work it out without people who have no idea what it is like deciding they're being attention seekers?
