Gerard Deulofeu - Once a Blue, always a Blue

Nope, im suggesting that we have a squad of players, some players are young, some players are old, some players play in certain positions, some dont.

When I think of my "best" team, I dont consider ages, Jags and Baines are the first names in.

Im saying that maybe you should focus less on the players age, if anything, its a hindrance, players like Coleman, hes at his peak almost.

Given the choice, would you rather have a squad full of 28 year olds in their peak or a squad full of 19 year olds with potential?

It's all relative to the team I'd say mate. City's average age is 28. For arguements sake let's say they go and get their 3 main targets of Pogba, Sterling and De Bruyne. Would that make them as competitive as Chelsea who's average age is 26 (just). Munich and Dortmund, the season they both were in the champions league final had an average age of 24 and 25 respectively. Imagine those same teams in 3 years if both had kept the same squad. I suppose it all depends on how good the youngster is because if they already play at Pogba and De Bruyne's level then their potential is immeasurable

Chelseas best player last season was 34 year old John Terry, Evertons best player was 32 Phil Jagielka, if City buy all these players, their best player will still probably be 32 year old Yaya Toure.

Age is irrelevant, in the season you currently play.

Well that depends on the player surely? Knowing how to use somebody like Saha when he was at us with his ageing body is different to how for example Martinez will handle Delefeou. You've used examples of older players who still run around like robots thanks to modern medical science and good genes. Chelsea played Drogba 28 times last season out of a possible 64 games and he scored 4 goals. His nearest comparable season in terms of games played was 2007/2008. He played 4 more games and scored 11 more goals. Same player, same manager. All that's changed is his age and because of that his role in the team. If he still played like he did in 2007/2008 he would have smashed defences all across the league about the place like rag dolls. His body couldn't do that anymore and Chelsea had to take that into account

So what your saying is that 37 year old Drogba is not the same player as 27 year old Drogba? What about 17 year old Drogba?

And every player is different.

I just want Zat to stop going on about all these young players in the side and realise that players over 30 have a role to play in every side.
Careful, or you'll have the man on your back.

I think I misunderstood you there pal. I thought you were saying players age doesn't matter at all. Of course, you need a good balance in any team. Even the class of '92 had the likes of Pallister, Robson, Irwin, Schmeichel and Bruce to ease them in

Of course players age matters, Christ we all saw how much Distin fell apart last season, even Cahill near the end of his time here, players age, but some still have a role to play, but at the same time, we have a squad full of young players, if even half reach their full potential they will be talented lads, but at the moment, a lot of them are just raw talent.

Just read all Zatmans posts, hes like a broken record, core this, yewtree that, it sickens me.

Well, the same thing is true for athletes. "Sometimes, you have to be lucky to develop into a top class footballer."

A mate of mine knows West Hams Cresswell and he was saying that at Tranmere he was behind a very good leftback and thought he had no chance of replacing him. The left back got injured, Cresswell had a few decent games, the manager liked him and then he just kept developing quicker after that. He reckons without that lad getting injured at that particular time he wouldnt have made it.

Same could be said about Coleman's development i suppose though too mate, from memory it took basically 3 players being out injured for him to get a chance at more than a odd game at rb, since then he hasn't looked back.

Another example of players developing was a lad I worked with who come through at Crewe. He said they had great facilities, good coaches and he was highly regarded (at that level) but he couldnt make the breakthrough. Ended up moving to Tranmere and Wrexham late teens/early twenties and into semi pro and he said the kick in the gut of being dropped by Crewe and the drop in level of facilities after Crewe and he just stopped developing.

Not sure what my point is but it seemed relevant 10 minutes ago when I started typing.

Really good to hear that him and Seamus have been messaging over the last season. It's so important that they work well together, they could be absolutely devastating if they get a really good understanding going

And if they have been messaging, and Deulofeu has come here you'd assume Coleman hasn't been slating Martinez.
