Just a thought but if Barca came in for Stones next summer would it make the loss of him more palatable if as part of the deal the 'buy back' clause on Geri was scrubbed. I know it's a hypothetical question but there does seem to be a resignation amongst GOT members that Stonesy may be prized away after next years Euros to the likes of Barca in which event the club needs to protect its interests and ensure that Geri is not then sold back on the cheap.
I think making him Spain U21 captain has really helped his development this season. Being the leader on the pitch can only sky rocket his confidence and there's no doubt he's a confidence player that performs better when he feels he's essential to the team.

we have a few players coming on leaps and bound this season, lukaku, being one.. deulofeu being absolutely another, he's on fire right now.
lets face it - Barca would be stupid not to activate his buy back clause. They could sell him for a tidy profit almost immediately.
They may instead think "give him another year of this developemnt at Everton and we will get a better player" - one way or another I do not expect him to be here in 2 years time. Sadly.

Spain Under-21 Coach Albert Celades hailed the contribution of captain Gerard Deulofeu against Croatia after the Everton winger scored twice.
Marco Asensio scored La Rojita’s other goal in the 3-2 victory but it was Deulofeu who drew the plaudits by making it five goals in two games, having claimed a hat-trick against Georgia.
“Gerard had a great game. We encourage him to continue to score these goals and put in these good performances,” Celades said post-match, according to the Spanish Football Federation’s official site.
