Why can't he do both?

He could

But the assist should always be the primary outcome

The shot should be if there isn't a good pass or he's lined up to make the most of it

For example, at Boro when he scored it was the best option to shoot. When he got the assist for Lukaku, it was best to pass

Furey seemed to be suggesting he should shoot more regardless of whether it was the best option, which I disagree with

That's ridiculous mate. As long as the ball ends up in the net it doesn't matter. The ball going in is the primary outcome.

Say he's clean through on goal. He's highly likely to score. He passes to Rom who misses. I'd be livid.

Yes, mate. I want him to shoot from an impossible angle when he gets to the byline rather than trying to pick a teammate out.

I was talking more about when he comes inside or is on the edge of the box when a team have 9-10 men behind the ball.

he got in a few good shooting opportunities against palace where he should have shot. All comes with feeling comfortable in the team i think. For example, a youngster doesn't come in and start barking at the other players.

All I'm saying is he should think "assist" first

If he's clear on goal then that thought would last all of a nano-second because it's obvious, but he should still process it his mind with "should I pass this?" before doing anything else

This is all my opinion of course, but that's what I think a winger should do. All I'm saying is that I like that he plays for the team more than himself these days and I would be worried about him going back to his old ways

If he can balance the two, then great, but if it's a choice between the two, I'd rather him keep getting assists than always looking to score himself

No

He should think "where are my team mates, are any of them in a better position than me?"

If the answer to that is no, he should have a shot. If it's yes, he should look to set them up

This will all be done mentally in seconds because he's a bloody good footballer like

Exactly it's not even a thing. Furet said he should shoot more because he had ample chance to on Monday and didn't when perhaps should have.
You said he should think 'assist first' which is wrong and different to waht you said above.

He'll do the right thing most times though because as you say he's dead good.
