...Eggs, my old buddy, I'm detecting a sardonic nuance to your contributions of late. Need I remind you that we got a record 72 PL points just recently. And while 5th is the same as 15th, we are in a cup semi-final...
....and ....we're due a penalty
How could you forget my esteemed dinner time conversationalist? 72 is the new 69.

Oh, and it will be absolutely titillating when we get a winner from the penalty box in the cup semi. Indeed it will.

...I'm trying to get my head around this new position...

...what Penthouse Forum fantasist conjured up a '72'?...not the same guy who came up with the injured seagull story back in Jan 1976's edition?

*I've always felt sorry for seagulls after reading that.

link needed there Sir

I didn't mention Lennon.

Cleverley is a good player but he isn't a winger and this constant choice to only play one is baffling, we look so unbalanced.

Deulofeu is the type of player who may look rubbish for spells but he is prone to do something ridiculously good at any moment, can you say the same about Tom Cleverley?

Lukaku aside he is our best player so he should be playing, if not all the time, then certainly a hell of a lot more than he is. We would have more points if he had started more games.

I agree in principle.

But what we needed at the time was Clevs to come in and add some more solidity to the side and it worked.

Now that has stagnated a bit so time to get Del back in.

Agreed. It seemed the whole point of taking Deulofeu out was to become a bit more solid. And it worked for a bit. But we are still losing and not doing much else, so get the assist machine back in ASAP.

I would anyway.

yep. reminds of that line from Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone : "When you ain't got nothing, you got nothing to lose"

...and continuing the theme (and directed toward R Martinez) : " You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal".

that bird is limp...

Your thoughts on how/where Geri needs insertion into the starting lineup to provide us with that extra attacking penetration please? Assuming Lennon starts as well.
A man with your experience (re- dealing with once proud members of your ASS movement), is well equipped to accommodate matters concerning extra penetration. I would never presume to lend the esteemed head of ASS suggestion as to improving said...

This is the problem I think if results don't go our way then he's singled out. We are generally a more cohesive and solid side with him in but it still relies on other players producing in the final third. Just throwing more players of the same type onto the pitch is an easy but not always sensible solution.
Generally you need at least two of Barkley, Rom, Del and Lennon producing. But apart from Lennon they are all still short of enough experience that usually guarantees consistency.
That consistency will come with plenty of the ball played simply to them and Cleverley is there to do that. Until then we've got to look at rotating the others or reorganising defensively to allow an extra player in that position.
Cleverley is an easy player to drop and I want Del in the side more than he is now. But it might be better for him if Cleverley is in that team too.
For the record as well, we tended to have either Sheedy or Richardson left side in our best team ever. Both more suited to central midfield and definitely neither were wingers

Richardson & sheedy were wide players.

That 80's team had 2 had worker wide players who both scored goals and got assists.
Today players like that would be worth fortune's

The full backs are the problem for me and how the manager wants them to play. Mirralas & geri offer so much more going forward than our full backs. But Martinez is playing more hard working players in midfield so the full backs can become our wingers.

Be interesting to see exactly how many assist our full backs have got in the last 2 seasons.

I don't think either were natural wide players. Richardson definitely not but he was willing to slot into any position. Sheedy is obviously an unfair comparison with any wide midfielder as his delivery was the best I've seen. But he didn't look to use the width or beat anyone. Being in that position was definitely about balance in that side. When he moved centrally he was maybe even more effective.
I agree about the full backs completely though and was kind of what I was hinting at. I was devastated to see John Bailey replaced by Pat in that 80s side, but the freedom it gave us elsewhere made a huge difference.
It's a wrench but I think we've got to either be looking at more traditional full backs or three at the back and proper wing backs. Del can then play either out wide or centrally. I'd prefer the latter. I think we are probably looking at this but it's a huge decision to replace two players who've been great for us. I wouldn't be doing it to accommodate Mirallas but there's something potentially very special about Del.
