Goalkeeper issues and who solves them?

Most would agree an upgrade on pickers is desirable, but I think its a bit of a stretch to claim that olsen is indisputably better given that he's only played a handful of games, and particularly given his latest performance, which left a lot to be desired.

One bad performance is really knee jerk considering he has been solid in all his other games.

No keeper in the world is always great.

The slip was bad, but ok he slipped.

lack of quality with clearances - that’s a worry. Not much distance on the punts but not much accuracy on passes to get out of trouble.

yep he got away with it against Leeds.. had caused himself trouble all night.. we need Southall quality between the sticks... where is he?

Usually I would have a replacement in mind, but I don't. We need a reliable keeper who is decent with the ball at their feet.

I think the answer is Jordan Pickford. IMO Olsen was brought in to get a reaction from Pickford and also to give Carlo the option of taking Pickford out of the limelight when needed. Feels like a mild success so far.

We've all heard the stories now of Pickford having regular sessions with a psychologist, this combined with age and experience should hopefully help him improve his mental state within games.

Let's not forget that he's only 27. Goalkeeper profile is evolving at the moment but plenty of wobbly goalkeepers have peaked in their early 30s and then played into their late 30s. If managed correctly he could fit into this category.

The sensible thing to do in the summer might be to loan out Virginia and sign a promising young keeper for the 23s/3rd keeper slot.

I've probably been one of the last to call for a new keeper and have backed Pickford to improve... but I think the time has come to say can he step change. We don't need adequate, we need the best we can afford. Look at the teams in the top 6. Almost to a team they have invested heavily in their stopper.. for good reason.. I think it's become clear how important this role is .. more than ever.. and a solid number 1 is worth as much as a striker now.. was never the case before.

I agreed until very recently mate, but unfortunately I think he's more Joe Hart than anything else at this point.

With Europa league starting soon it would be a good opportunity to view some lesser known keepers from across the continent

Benficas keeper is reportedly very good

A solid and settled defence will help any keeper. A decent defensive midfield presence will protect that defence and allow it to keep its shape which in turn will help out the keeper.

If Allen and Doucoure had been available consistently and we didn't have an obvious right back problem, I suspect that our goalkeeping worries would not be so high.

Having said all that, a confident and able keeper allows the defence to become settled and gives them confidence to allow the midfield in front of them to do their work and it's a virtuous circle of each player working for the other.

I think that there will be no keeper being bought in the near future unless circumstances fall in our favour such as a decent keeper becoming suddenly available or someone pops up with a decent bid for one of Pickford or Olsen. In the meantime, Pickford and Olsen will be adequate if not satisfactory goalkeeping options. I think sorting out Olsen's feet and Pickford's head are the priorities for now (though for their age, this should have been done long ago).

lets not dress this up. Pickford is not a good keeper, in fact he is certainly one of the worst in the league for the last few years. The mistake was signing an average keeper to "push" Pickford. If Pickford cannot push himself beyond his displays, he should have been binned not encouraged.

If we are serious about becoming top 4 contenders in the next two to three years, we need an elite keeper & cannot afford to be crippled by points thrown away. The one I would be looking at is David Soria @ Getafe; but there are people being paid a lot more money to have more knowledge than me
