Goats squad analysis thread 2019/20

I can’t disagree with this last sentence at all.

We were told targets had been identified in early May. We are now less than 2 weeks to the first game and it seems that no matter where the transfer deadline gets moved to, clubs are still determined to gamble and make everything last minute and not be ready to go from the first month of the season.
Silva is piossed off and I dont blame him.

All the good work in the last third of last season thrown away.

I don't think it's thrown away, as apart from Zouma, that's the same 1st XI. We have failed so far to build upon it, and that is as good as throwing away the foundations we were building. I hope we have a decent run up unto the City game in which we can start incorporating our (very) late arrivals. It's a high risk strategy though. I think Silva deserved better, after all it's him carrying the responsibility for results after having such late access to identified players. I know it's not all smooth sailing getting players in, especially if they're players in demand by other clubs, but we should have sorted some (1-3?) of them out before now.

We always seem to be 5 players away. That is effectively half a team. They then have to bed in so it's going to be another season where we show potential but end up somewhere between 7th and 10th. Once we get rid of some of the wage drains it may allow us to bring players in sooner at the minute we would break rules if we had too many players in. However the situation has been caused by previous mismanagement so the current team unfortunately need to sort this before they can start doing things completely there own way.

I’d say currently 2 away from a good TEAM. Forward & centre back.

When we sell Gana that’s up to 3. Then we need to make sure we have better options on the bench... but wolves managed last year on playing pretty much the same team week in week out, so that’s just down to luck over injuries & suspensions.

... we are screwed. lol

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

This (fingers crossed) late show of arrivals will cost us a lot of points early in the season.

With that much exposure to risk of injury exposing our squad weaknesses, what do you do? Prioritise one competition over another and then guaranteeing failure in some competitions rather than trying for all. We really have painted ourselves into a tight spot.

A few wins, and some decent new signings and no injuries and it'll all be fine... we are screwed indeed.

I'm trying to be optimistic... it's not so easy!

I really thought we'd have some new incomings by now. I think Delph is a very decent versatile squad option, and Lossl as 3rd string keeper is neither here nor there. But how we have let every other signing slip is outrageous.

Surely we'd have been in contact with clubs prior to the window opening and sorted some of these things out. I know we had the South American and African players somewhat preoccupied, but I doubt we are going for South American and African players exclusively so a little flimsy to understand what is delaying us quite so much.

I suspect its financial straight jacketing because of the drain from the dross before the accountant lets the deals be done - which I could understand as it's fairly sound business wise to not be hemorrhaging cash, but then why haven't we been more creative in getting shut of the deadwood?

Concerning times. I hope to be laughing about my bed wetting in a couple of weeks.

The thing is, if you make statements prior to a window opening (sorry, WELL prior to it opening) about having all your targets identified, you make a rod for your own back if you dont start buying. That was pure and simple bad governance. Now Brands is a hostage to his own words entering the final 10 days of the window.

That's added unnecessary pressure on himself and got a fanbase riled up.

Yep, as much as I've blown Brands trumpet, I did take that as meaning we would have all targets sorted well before the window was closed, in time for pre season games.
Can't help but think we've missed an opportunity to gain an advantage over rivals.

Wasnt it Silva that said we had the targets identified?

Maybe he had his eye on some new cones to put out?

Anyway, take this elsewhere Dave, dont make me thread ban you.

Trust the youth? lol

Assume we will get knocked out in the league cup first round as usual? lol

I’d rather have a top rate first 11 with no cover than cover in wide forward with no number 9. I’m just glad I’m not the manager!!

It's about a 10 point deficit you have to make up if you're gelling players into the autumn. I get Silva's frustration entirely.

The one notable thing about the current hierarchical set-up is that information doesn't tend to leak into the public domain from our end unless it's of our own volition, and so when we do hear about a transfer, it'll (hopefully) be when it's pretty much concluded. This gives me hope that the wheels are being greased for a good few additions towards the back end of the week.

Should we manage to get Kean (35m and Gbamin (~28m) over the line (which do look for all intents and purposes to be go'ers at this point), we'll be left with a shortage of options at RB, CB and LW/RW. Granted, Delph & Gbamin together could provide adequate cover across the back-line if need be, but it would be far more preferable to acquire a long-term, permanent fix at CB or RB during this window (~20m fee, high ceiling, manageable wages, big ambition).

IMO, Zaha wouldn't provide good value for money considering the outlay (75m+), Malcom looks to have suitors (Zenit,Dortmund) willing to meet Barca's valuation, and it looks like an astronomical fee would be needed to prise Neres from Ajax this summer (€50m for big talent ultimately unproven in physical league). As for alternatives, I'm unsure as to why Ziyech has never appeared as a viable fit for our model given his €30m release clause and left-footed dexterity (alternatively, that Lookman from Leipzig looks a talent).
